There are so many critical jobs that Americans just won’t do and the far right racists are hell bent to cause a major economic collapse with no food production, no restaurants, no garbage collection, no parcel delivery…… It’s how to Make America Grate
You mean that Americans won’t do under the current working conditions and at current wages. There’s a way to make those jobs appeal to Americans, but we’d rather pay close to nothing and give no protections to the workers.
Dunno why you got downvoted, this is exactly the reason why immigrants work these jobs. Zero protection, zero oversight, full threat of immediate deportation if bossman isn’t happy that day, and it is 100% the douches at the top running the whole illegal grift.
Yeah the Tyson and Purdue CEOs would have to cut profit margins and stop being billionaires for farm workers to make living wages.
The annoying thing is that universal healthcare would probably make the biggest difference because all these employers wouldn’t have to worry about full time workers requiring health insurance and the rest of us could afford to work for 1/3 less (at least that’s what independent HC costs me at the moment).
constructions: only ever saw asians and mexicans doing it, rarely you get other pocs, and even rarer to have a white person doing that job, and usually they are in one that charges the most for a construction job.
I own a dairy. We pay a fare wage. I’ve never had a white guy last longer than a week. Jobs for immigrants, legal or not, are important to my community, my local economy, and our nation as a whole. Historically, this sort of thing is old hat.
I’m constantly torn listening to the comments and replies on Lemmy that are spot on, but also have no context to how anything actually works.
My " no kings" truck window paint today drew some ire from the locals, but I’ll stand by my employees and friends. It maybe helps that I’ve also been driving around for years with a “Ted Cruz ate my son” and a local NPR sticker as well. They know not to talk politics at the bar with me anymore. But damn it if I’m not trying in my own way.
All in all, we may be staring to make some headway on this immigration/ice thing. But it’s not happening fast enough.
It never should have gotten this bad to begin with.
White people used to work construction. They were tradesmen and unionized.
If you go to some parts of the US, your hotel room will be cleaned by a white person. There are still places unwelcoming to minorities, and white people do the jobs.

Won’t is a strong word. The government has silently accepted the status quo of underpaid and abused migrant workers to keep the labor costs low.
Regardless of origin I think field hands need dignity and fair wages, even though this will cause our food prices to rise.
