Have you tried different version of proton, proton GE or even wine?
I have only had good luck with using wine with the ea app on my desktop PC.
Sounds like Linux Mint would be a good start for you

Are your games installed on an NTFS formatted drive? Steam on Linux generally doesn’t play nice with NTFS.

An update black screened his system and corrupted his time shift backups. So he gave Linux Mint a shot and has been using it for several weeks.
