I’m kind of okay with this. It was a reasonable take – not a hot take or an incendiary comment or something. Mods using their power to shut down discussion – expected on that instance I guess ;)

This is my first time getting any sort of ban on any lemmy instance. Now I just need to get banned on a right-wing server for some other centrist take, to keep balance in the universe ;)

How many of you have experienced this on lemmy.ml?

It would be nice if other large instances like .world had the cojones to defederate .ml because they’re getting tankier by the day. They’re almost as bad as lemmygrad. Just because it’s a large instance run by the Lemmy devs doesn’t mean they should get special treatment. If they’re going to allow (read: encourage) crap like this, they should be cut off to prevent it from spreading.

There is a realistic scenario where Mali starts reclaiming domains who are using their TLD to mean Marxist-Leninist.

Mali had a ten year period where they were allowing free registration. That doesn’t exist anymore.

They also keep getting classified documents due to typos in army.mil email addresses and similar ;)

Lemmygrad and .ml are run by the same people. The latter is the “public” face I suppose

Defederation shouldn’t be the first solution to problems with other instances. If they want to be overzealous and heavy handed with moderation on their site then they will lose users who want more fair and effective moderation. But if you defedate with them, then their users just get stuck on these echo chamber communities.

Defederation should be a last resort to deal with poor moderation of abusive content, not moderation that we don’t agree with.

When an instance’s admins actively support hostile regimes and condone mods censoring posts about human rights abuses and genocide while spreading propaganda, it’s not a simple disagreement.

.ml has no problem with people defending Russia’s invasion and genocide in Ukraine, or denying China’s genocide of Uighur Muslims. But they’ll delete posts calling out Turkey and Hungary for acting in bad faith as NATO and EU members.

They’re not just allowing but encouraging disinformation to propagate across the fediverse in order to win more support for their dictator daddies. Instance admins have the same responsibility to prevent dangerous disinformation campaigns from spreading as any other social network. They can either opt to do so on their own, or they can wait for regulations to force them to like Facebook and Xhitter.

I agree with your assessment on their political views. I also don’t mod any communities on Lemmy or run my own instance so I don’t have to worry about trying to deal with moderating the harmful political views of admin and mods with their other users’ contributions to the network. I am just stating my opinion of not throwing the baby out with the bath water by going with the nuclear option that is defederation.

Ironic, then, that you picked an instance that picks Defederation as it’s first approach to problem solving.

Not that you can see this, as I’m posting from one of the instances harmed by reckless defederation.

I was never once contacted or given any chance to address whatever issue they had.

Seconded. I joined .ml because they were the first to have a formula 1 community.

I prefer to follow the news on other instances like beehaw and .world to avoid your experience.

There are normal/non-radical communities that exist that would be lost via defederation.

There are sometimes insightful perspectives there that could lack in other instances. I much prefer to have access to .ml and .world news in my feed as well as .ml users in .world threads. Given the 50 years of neoliberal, anti-worker programming we’ve been showered with in the West, I appreciate points of view that challenge it. I don’t not agree with the CCP schmoozing that goes on in .ml, but there’s also useful opinions on workers’ rights, democratic socialism, looking at problems from class perspective, etc.

There’s nothing I would love more than shitty neo-nazi instances defederating and never coming back, just don’t come crying back once you all end up recreating the exact same monster that reddit ended up becoming. I got banned from .world (which works like an individualized defederation) and it’s already made my lemmy experience 10,000,000,000x better not having to deal with the constant fascists from there leaving harassing messages and mass downvoting everything I post.

Western chauvinism is when you criticize right-wing strongmen, and the more you criticize the right-wing, the more chauvinist it is.

I don’t see anything wrong with what you wrote. And what the hell is “western chauvinism” really? Eastern Europe and Western Europe are simply not THAT different culturally.

The only thing I would actually add to your comment (which would obviously get me banned) would be to say that vetoes should not be a thing in NATO…for ANY country.

I’ve had cases where I got Hexbear dogpiled, so my comment got deleted. However, the mods still kept the dogpiling comments and I was still getting responses because obviously hexbear was brigading.

Hoorah, welcome to the club! It is a badge of honor really. I use a separate account to have some discussions on .ml but in the mean time I added lemmy.ml to my instance blocklist and Lemmy has been wonderfull since.

A big issue seems to be that users looking for worldnews get their world news instead of world at lemmy.world…

And yes I sometimes have discussions on .ml as I think some of the extrimist idolization needs to be called out. So that if normal people see such comments they can also read a dissenting viewpoint.

And every now and then, just to tell a tankie that the Uyghur camps are real… Getting banned and doing it again.

Sorry to hear that mate. Same here, made a post about it too. I think it’s a few users with an agenda, combined with an automod that carries out the actual ban, and mods who don’t review. Discuss. Block (optional). Move on.

Also: as the thread gets active, tankie users may try to hijack your post with comments blaming you for your ban, calling you names/ libtard/ govt bootlicker etc. Ignore these idiots. They come out hot and expect your reaction. Don’t drop to their level. Be better.
