… Do I still get to claim I’m merely “fandom adjacent” if I’ve crafted several 'sonas and have actively played as them in various media? Asking for a friend. :P

Me kinda? I’m adjacent. I think. I’ve been in and out as a lurker in the fandom for the past decade or so. I still don’t have a sona… mostly because I can’t decide what species.

Hello! I don’t get involved in the community much (because shy), but I would consider myself as some kind of wolf.

Entry level furry. If it’s a character I like, I might do the deed to them but I don’t seek it out outside of that

as i’ve noted before furries are the vanguard of any successful online community so any niche you can find them in is probably a stable one

Plus if all those furries working in tech just went poof, then the internet would probably collapse!

It really comes down to having a “place” to engage in. I don’t think beehaw/lemmy has a furry community yet. This is further complicated with “art” (which I understand, hosting+moderation). One of the things I’ll miss from reddit is those communities. Granted, I was lurking more for the “art”.

I’ve moved in and out of the spaces for a while but never fully immersed, in part because I didn’t feel strongly about any potential fursonas, and have a disinterest in the most popular art styles used. I’ve used a rat as an avatar in the past but I don’t consider the rat to be representative of me so much as my artist’s signature. And it’s always been drawn as a cartoon rat, not an anthro rat.

I did used to draw a lot of aliens, monsters, and dragon-people though, and identify with those. It helped me feel stronger or more capable to imagine myself that way. If I ever do settle on an animal to present me online and join the furry community ‘properly’, it will probably end up being either a fantasy fusion, a scalie, or both.

have furries been thriving on the fediverse all this time?! eg, mastodon. i legitimately feel like I’ve noticed a furry “void” in my usual internet spaces for a few years…

there does seem to be a dearth of them around here and a lot of that probably has to do with the explosion of the mastodon instance snouts.online a few years back and a generally bad experience with mastodon many furries (at least in my circles) had back around 2019-2020

it’s been years now but just the generally, for lack of better term, “wokescold”-y or “shitlib”-y vibe of mastodon did a lot of that. the community felt extremely overbearing at times with content warnings and social norms, in a way that especially didn’t vibe with groups that are repressed and want to talk about those experiences. a lot of it was of course just technically confusing for some people, as was trying to leverage network effects to stick with your friends. some people–artists especially–had specific needs that were hard to meet with migration. and the whole process in general was haphazard and over time as people settled inevitably mastodon politics also got in the way of it, what with defederation being an option and all.

eventually i think it just burned a lot of people out on the platform in a way that has really precluded swathes of the furry community from setting up shop on another federated place, to avoid something like that happening again.

Gotcha. I remember the content warnings being a bit odd on there. Perhaps on a future platform or platform iteration, CW’s can be a built-in feature perhaps by tag. Then users could opt or in to those contents, or cover it with warnings before display.

Has a furry community on Beehaw been considered? I don’t know enough to decide if it is necessary or not based on the number of people here. I think Creative would suffice so long as those browsing there aren’t bothered by it. But I wonder if furries are already hesitant to post to general art places in case it isn’t received as well. I want to see all the furry OC’s and artwork people have to share here, but I also understand that turning half the posts on Creative into furry content could get annoying to those who don’t want to go there for that.

not immediately; if things started to get crowded in Creative a community would probably get created. for what it’s worth also my post was received pretty well earlier this week, so i don’t think people mind too much, lol
