Will Apple TV+ become the home of sci-fi? Looks like they’re investing a lot in new and existing sci-fi shows, many of which are good.

I don’t think so. They seem more interested in other parts of the market generally. I actually thought this would be Amazon, what with The Expanse, Wheel of Time, Rings of Power and other things they licensed. Though their execution has been spotty at best.

Apple TV+ have See, Severance, Foundation, Silo and now this just to name the ones off the top of my head. I guess Apple isn’t releasing at the same quantity, but there seems to be a decent percentage in the sci-fi genre out of their releases.

Amazon have done so as well, but agree that the quality with Amazon shows have been spotty.

Out of those only severance really managed to convince me. Watching silo mostly for the Rebecca Ferguson trip I’ve been on since dune.

My biggest hope in sci-fi’s future was crushed when HBO cancelled raised by Wolves :(

I didn’t necessarily mean they were all great, but at least they’re continuing to invest in the genre.

Severance is my pick of the bunch as well. Foundation isn’t perfect, but it looks stunning and had enough in it to make me want to continue with another season.

Maybe I should’ve elaborated some more. I don’t feel like quantity is a winning strategy, especially with the bunch of other shows up these days on Hulu, HBO, Disney, Prime and to a lesser degree also Netflix and some smaller providers I don’t expect a definitive home for sci fi in the future.

I’m actually broadly enjoying the Apple SciFi stuff, ‘See’ less than the others. But I think the bigger thing is that the Apple shows are more “incidentally scifi” than the shows people tend to think of when talking scifi. The technology and such is there, but it’s more about the drama and story
