It broke George’s heart not to direct Apocalypse Now!. It was a passion project and something important he wanted to make and leave him mark on, but he just couldn’t make it work. Hell he had heart problems towards the end of Star Wars’ production cause of stress and as early as scripting was tearing his hair out. Probably saved his life given how bad the production turned out. I remember Coppola refused to speak to George for a year because he left him to do AN on his own.
