Well, it’s been fun all, but this little VM has not had enough power to drive this Lemmy instance, and our daily users appear to be me and maybe one other person. Apollo Town goes dark on Oct 20.
I’ve migrated my own subscriptions using the lemmy_migrate script to a new account on my own more powerful hardware, usenet.lol(It’s a Lemmy instance with an ironic domain). Given that a lot of people made accounts here but never used them, I’m not intending to open it to registration, but perhaps I will if demand is there.
Feel free to use that script I linked, it works well, and you can move to another Lemmy account on another server. Please leave a comment or reach out to me on Mastodon at @[email protected] if you’d like to join usenet.lol.
And if for some reason someone else wants to take over the domain and keep operating an instance, likewise reach out to me and perhaps we can arrange that.
Thank you for heads-up, and thank you for keeping the server up these past couple of months. I enjoyed being part of a small instance, it allowed me to watch the drama on the bigger ones from the sidelines.
Agreed, I like the smaller instances for that reason. Sad to see you go, but understand why.
You’re more than welcome to join Usenet.lol if you would like.
My new instance is on hardware owned by me and is Usenet.lol, you can join that if you want. I’m just taking down the public instance as I’d have to upgrade it to make it work well, but few people appear to be using it.
Update: I have opened usenet.lol to registrations, and since it runs on hardware I own, it’s not going away anytime soon. Just let me know if you hail from Apollo Town in the registration application and I’ll approve you, then you can use the lemmy_migrate script to move your account over.
It doesn’t suffer from the small RAM and CPU of the VM that ran Apollo Town, either 😀
Just so you know, I used it every day. ;) Thanks for your work, and for the heads up!
