There were endless moments in season 3 that would have been solved by reaching out to the progressive Borg collective from the season 2 finale. Not to mention that a few character arcs and character development moments that just seem suspiciously absent in season 3. So, is the entirety of season 2 not cannon or am I missing something?
Not retconned, but I definitely feel like they wanted to forget it.
Absolutely. Thereās a line in Season 3 that really stuck out to me. I canāt remember who it is that says it, I feel like itās Raffi or Crusher, but they say āNo one has heard from the Borg in 20 years.ā So either the events of Season 2 were extremely and heavily classified to this individual, the realization of them being a ānew Borg collectiveā is believed with utter certainty to the point of not even considering them Borg, or the events didnāt happen.
They wouldnāt be the only ones.
They acknowledge it briefly. Captain Shaw grumbled, āForget all that weird shit on the Stargazer, the real Borg are still out there.ā
Picard Season 3 was explicitly being pitched as a TNG reunion season. They knew a lot of viewers would be jumping in mid-show, so it intentionally doesnāt rely heavily on the canon of the first two seasons to enjoy.
I liked the first two seasons for what they were, but honestly I get it. Picardās premise of, āLegacy and new characters getting into adventures away from Starfleetā would have been tricky to balance with a full TNG cast reunion. Leaning into TNG Season 8 vibes made sense.
Picard also mentioned having recently learned more about his family.
Thank you. This makes a lot of sense. I mean, in-universe itās nuts, but out here in the real world - artistic license for a better show is a-okay in my book. Besides, itās the reason I muscled through season 2 to start with.
Thereās nothing contradictory about the seasons, and they were written and filmed back-to-back. Thereās no need for a retcon.

On the whole, i enjoyed S2, but if I was to give it a numerical rating, Iād say 4/10, below average for Trek.
One of my bigger complaints would be with how watered down the Borg Queen was in terms of threat. Weāve previously seen Borg assimilation happen in mere seconds, and the assimilation of the Dr. took multiple episodes to resolve.
As for my biggest complaint, itād be the setting. A jump to the past is a nice trip for a 2 or 3 parter in Trek, but a whole season just didnāt jive that much for me.
On the other hand, S3, that was some of the best NuTrek Iāve seen so far.
I recently watched it and didnāt regret doing so. Picard was way more fun for me than Reddit had me thinking it was going to be.
Honestly, I enjoyed the portrayal of the Borg Queen outside the context of the collective. She got the sort of character development that I didnāt know I needed. And frankly, she was practically holding S2 up after they arrived in the past.
Then she got the villain ball and ran off with Jurati and my interest fell flat.
The Borg Queen worked as a character. She didnāt work as a villain. It was impossible to balance her being a galactic level threat against a crew that had no resources, and Doyalistly wasnāt allowed to deal with her until Picard had time to spare to concentrate on her.
A jump to the past is a nice trip for a 2 or 3 parter in Trek, but a whole season just didnāt jive that much for me.
Same. To me, a sci-fi series or season set in the past just screams, āSomebody is over this shit.ā Whether thatās the actors, writers, or (most likely) the money, somebody didnāt want to build a bunch of god-damn sets, or get up at fuck oāclock to go into prosthetics, or pay for any of that nerd nonsense.
All posts and comments in Daystrom Institute must be substantive and explain their reasoning. Simply declaring that a season of the show is so bad that it shouldnāt exist is not sufficient.
If you want to point out specific discrepancies and argue that they are a reason to view S2 and S3 and contradictory, that would be appropriate here.
Not retconed per se, they just canāt make their mind up on what the series is and keep radically changing direction and dumping prior development and characters. Changes are often for the better and donāt directly contradict but thereās certainly a lack of any common thought in the story theyāre trying to tell.
Well, thatās a decision youāll have to make for yourself. I happen to have grown up on DS9, and in my heart thereās not much room for Worfās Wacky Adventures on Risa; people a couple years older than me tend to have performed some personal, private retconning of at least one episode of TNGās first seasonāif not more. And I have just finished the novel āSpockās World,ā and realized I wish Iād read it years ago and some of the thingās Diane Carey wrote in that exceptional book are better than the contradictory ideaās Paramount officially introduced in later media.
What season 2 of Picard means to the producers is far less important than what it means to youāand if it inspires you to go back and watch TNG, you may want to jump straight to Season 2 of that show, as well.
