Surely the idea that law should be ultimately judged by a group of old people who select each other is the best way possible for law to work!

Separation of powers doesn’t mean you can’t have a better system than nomination in the adjudicative branch, and it doesn’t mean you can’t have assholes at the head of branches. It means you don’t grant all branches of power to the same assholes. Which would be worse in any case.
Bottom line: It’s a great and essential principle to maintain democratic institutions, but of course not enough by itself.

However, it’s a fact that a dictator needs, by definition, to break the separation of power in order to truly become the authoritarian leader with control over the country.
So NOT having separation of power is actually necessary to destroy a democracy.
I feel that trying to defend those things that someone would need to break in order to remove democracy is not a bad idea if we want to maintain democracy.
There are also a lot of other things that are necessary for a dictatorship… such as the dictator not being held accountable (meaning… transparency and mechanisms for accountability would be another principle to maintain democracy), or the dictator suppressing political opposition or dissent (so protecting opposition, whistleblowers and dissent, instead of prosecuting it would be another one). And I’m sure there are many others.
I mean… sure, you can, in theory, have a democracy without those things… but the more safeguards you remove the more and more you are allowing traits of dictatorship to creep in…
Because the alternative has already been tested thoroughly throughout history?
Because the alternative makes it that much easier for an aspiring fascist to take full control of every branch of power?

I am Canadian. I worked as a medic in Canada when 9-11 happened. I volunteered and left my home, family, friends and my job to come to NY to help my fellow man. I felt it was important. EMS then was a pretty small community when you got into higher skill levels so I personally knew some of the FF’s killed that day and many associated with them as well. I was there for a month with a team of fellow Canadians pulling out body parts of your countrymen.
I watched your people rant and rave and run around screaming to kill the terrorists. I watched your president openly lie to the people to get them into this state and declare war over fantasies and money. Our team was told to fuck off and go home when we objected or questioned at all or in any way. After our month was up we did. I personally haven’t crossed the border since and never would again after the treatment we received for trying to help.
We worked with people from all walks of life, all backgrounds on that site. All were screaming for blood without even looking at the facts. No one stood up and said it was not ok. No one attempted to stop it. They all screamed about bombs that never even existed and there was plenty of information available to be informed correctly.
The same is happening again except now it’s at home. You’re waiting for people who don’t care about you to stand up for you while they openly and brazenly lie to you. Until you realize no one is going to do it for you you’re fucked.

There are many examples from the recent past of people with less fighting the American military might with sweet fuck all. The Taliban did it for two decades and never once lost control. Why? Not because they have missiles and rocket launchers but because they’re organized. Ukraine stood duo to what was thought at the time to be the second strongest army in the world. They still stand up today. They didn’t lie down either and I doubt they ever will. Sure they had an organized army but a small one with very little training or modern equipment. No navy boats. Pretty much a non existent Airforce as well.
Americans however are cowards. Plain and simple. Unwilling to fight for themselves, their families or their rights. Every suggestion we could possibly make is met with disdain and the cry of it’s impossible. Yet others have done it multiple times in other places. Even to your own military that is supposedly impossible to fight.
