I know some want to practice foreign languages like that but I have trouble understanding what you’re saying and asking many times what you mean is awkward as hell. That’s why I just switch to English.
Fwiw my experience with French was quite a good one. My vocab is very limited, but I’ve been told I have a pretty good accent, so as long as the interaction is within the range of topics I know about (which, thankfully, includes most interactions a tourist would want to have), it goes quite well.
I was also staying in an Airbnb (back when it was quite new and hadn’t so obviously started enshitifying and damaging cities) way on the outskirts of Paris, where they weren’t as used to foreigners so their English wasn’t so fluent anyway.
