more adventures on rednote mostly because it’s entertaining how mad people get when i talk about it :3 /halfjoke
this was posted 12/31 btw so i don’t think “the mods haven’t gotten to it yet” is a real thing
#le is common in parallel to the anglosphere’s #wlw which i think is adorable
my number one qualm with little red book so far is there is no native translation like tiktok has. lots of google translate is necessary to get the social media to social :P
necessary disclaimer: fuck the CCP and all the real violence and repression they do. just want to give credit given where due, and so far here im just seeing a lot of assumptions with no evidence? so im gonna post what my experience is :) i welcome all to do the same
Well whoever said CCP will censor LGBT content doesn’t know much about the CCP.
On the other hand try posting anything critical about the Chinese government…
memes.ml banned me for saying both US and China engage in propaganda. One of the users, which I assume to be one of the moderators, responded as false equivalence because I could not reply the minute after the response. Either that, or because I directly mentioned .ml users in general is tone deaf about China doing its own propaganda.
I’m gay for tiananmen square.
weirdchamp but aight 🤨
i have to admit it is quite magnificent.
Out of every lesbian manwha I read all of them were Chinese
From what I’ve seen, a lot of queer people are afraid to be themselves there. Some may even experience backlash and threats of violence for being LGBTQIA. There’s a lot of hostility to us across that entire nation tbh.
On top of that, there is constant scrutiny with mass state surveillance. Queer and POC may be silenced or even face imprisonment for expressing themselves. And don’t forget that nation’s concentration camps, genocide, torture of political prisoners, and barring people who don’t toe the party line from residency and citizenship.
Oh wait, that isn’t Red Note. That’s the USA and my small town.
Oh wait, that isn’t Red Note. That’s the USA and my small town.
Damn u got me at the first half ngl
I mean…that’s both vampiric superpowers. China and the US.
There’s no such thing as a benevolent state, to be honest. Nations and borders only divide and subject us. Every day, I feel more sure that we need to build communities in spite of states and to do what we can to disrupt and abolish them, so thank you for mentioning this glaring example.
However, I will say when we in the US point at China, we’ve got three fingers pointing back at us. Pretty hypocritical of us, and largely racist.
I meeaannn… of course the US has an imperial bone to pick with the other imperial nations. So the same attitude and conditioning to “other” the competing nations applies equally to Russia and china. So I think I have to disagree on your point that there is inherent racism in the china conditioning. Does racism get borne out of the antagonistic relationship? Of course. But everything said about china is said equally (at least in spirit) about Russia.
And you’re absolutely right, there is no benevolent state. A state’s first and only goal is to sustain itself and secondly to increase is standing. And I’m def with you that we need to not let borders come between the global working class.
My whole point is there is a tendency on the more communist-leaning left to reverse the conditioning by just swinging all the way to the other side. “The US is bad, china/Russia is better.” They’re both equally imperialist, they’re both equally exploitative, and they’re both equally heinous. It’s absolutely a mistake “western” leftists make to embrace the other superpowers in an attempt to denigrate their own. It’s necessary to remove that lens when we discuss these kinds of issues to see the entire picture, because swinging to the other superpower nations and embracing them as better is such a limiting (and incorrect) way to think about it. It’s a simplified first step in realizing your home nation is wrong. Going against them for being wrong should not mean embracing their equally wrong counterparts.
I mean, the US is pretty substantially worse than China, by almost any metric.
And if you think it’s not a racial issue with China, I think you have some investigating to do. You obviously haven’t spent time on mainstream White Supremacist platforms such as reddit, Facebook, or the comments threads on any mainstream news article. Oh wait, I also see it here on Lemmy. There’s a constant othering of Chinese people in a way there’s not of people in Russia. (I even find it curious that Russia seems to appear out of nowhere in any conversation about China for no apparent reason, hmmmm… now why is that?)
That’s why Xiaohongshu/Red Note has been so illuminating for people. It’s been nice for me. Answering questions about each other’s languages and judiciously sharing pictures and videos has been cool, but I already know and talk to people from China, and my dad taught social studies. For many people, this is their first realization that we’ve been fed racist propaganda all our lives.
Now yes, people could react by romanticizing the state of China itself, after seeing the many ways in which it is better than the USA, but they will learn. And I hope the most important lesson they learn is that, as you said, states are made-up tools of the oppressors that only exist to divide and subject, to protect the state for the state’s sake, at our expense. Always at our expense.
China has no LGBT marriage rights and no protections against discrimination, how is that better? How is having fewer rights to be myself the preferable option in your view?
BWAHA you had me in the first half ngl 😆😆
You might appreciate this.
This guy asked people on Red Note if it’s ok to be gay, and I laughed at the response:
Now ask if you can be in a gay marriage in China (nope).
Ask if it is completely legalto be fired just because you are gay (yup).
China isn’t good on LGBTQ+ rights

Are these posts ads?
Yes I am being payed by the CCP to promote lesbianism
(sarcasm. the CCP is hatefully repressive to queer identities.)
(sarcasm. the CCP is hatefully repressive to queer identities.)
And yet, here you are, making this post.
Would you be making a post giving trump props if an occasion happened where he was the broken clock that happened to be right that one time? No? Then what are you doing here? (I don’t need you response, this is something you should be asking yourself)
You’re getting my response anyway, ready?
Would you be making a post giving trump props…?
Does Trump own TikTok? Instagram? No. So I would not give Trump props when TikTok or Instagram exhibit good behaviors.
- I am giving props to RedNote for the space it is allowing for queer voices.
- Fuck Trump.
- Fuck the CCP.
That’s it. You gotta engage your active listening skills more brother. ❤️
How do I sign up for that. I’d like to get paid!
I’m not sure it just kind of started happening
Suggesting that the CCP is open to letting lesbians live their life seems pretty surreal after what happened to Naomi Wu. It’s shocking how quickly the dust settled on that.
Though to anyone trying to encourage discontent to westerners with socially liberal beliefs, it’s a pretty helpful narrative to push.
yes. the CCP is homophobic to a repressive and violent degree. i would never suggest otherwise. and you are lying about me to say i am.
this post is about an app i am seeing queer people hang out on without much apparent censorship. you are having trouble exercising your listening skills.
With the edits your post comes across a lot less like astroturfing. I’m not sure that skepticism of the intent of anonymous users on social media is “trouble with listening skills” or cause for offense - we should all be aware malicious players want to influence us in different ways.
i didn’t edit my post LMAO you clearly just didn’t read it the first time
I guess you didn’t edit your reply to me either?
There’s no edit mark on their replies.
correct? the little pencil icon shows up when someone edits. for example i edited my reply to Fleur to add the sarcasm tag if that’s what you mean but i don’t think i edited any response to you at all.
so…
Can’t find em later if you don’t let them post now…
The level of shortsightedness in people is astounding to me again and again. History really seems to always repeat. When will people ever learn that there is no company in the world that is their friend.
“Oh, but it looks fine and i havent had any issue” says the little user that is currently feeding the networking effect of the next platform, that will inevitably fail in exactly the same way as every other for profit social media.
“Oh, but everyone is here and i dont wanna switch again” says the little user that now has the choice between losing all their feeds and follows or staying on a platform slowly being squeezed for money or political incentives.
When will people ever learn that there is no company in the world that is their friend.
In my experience people doing this transition are hyper aware and open about not trusting any company, TikTok, RedNote, or otherwise. So I think you are hitting the nail on the head, but coming at the thing from a different angle.
Do we have a fed version of tik tok yet? We’ve got lemmy for Reddit, pixelfed for Instagram, mastodon for Facebook/Twitter, theoretically bluesky for Twitter (although not exactly federated but can be?)… what’s tik toks equivalent?
Loops, it’s still in beta
https://joinloops.org/ is a project by pixelfed, i get downvoted whenever i bring it up tho lol
Why downvotes?
Their privacy policy is dogshit.
The issue is that lots of people joining, self aware or not, validates the platform in normie users eyes. I know this cant be solved on an individualist level, because humans are tribal creatures, but its still tough to watch every time it happens.
I frequently see post aroilund here asking “Is service X or website Y trustworthy?” and my thought is always “No, ofcourse not.” Anything thats not running on your computer is inherently untrusthworthy.
Yup. Wish there could be a migration to an actually decent open platform but we’re all hung up with underfunding and personal qualms getting in the way. “I won’t use PixelFed because it doesn’t have a dark mode” is a literal comment I have seen from a Lemmy user.
Ridiculous patterns of behavior on both sides 😭
Other people aren’t going to RedNote for political reasons. I’m not going to RedNote because I was never into TikTok.
I’m barely into YouTube, and I have no desire to jump back into short form algorithm driven stuff after a decade away from that noise. Deleting most socials as teen was the correct move. I only missed out on connecting with people I already knew.
Feeds are the bane of my existence. I don’t even look at my Lemmy feed. Instead, I check on individual communities and sort by new. Communities being smaller is an advantage for me.
Yeah, I can’t stand feeds and short form videos either, it feels like I am dumber after watching just a little bit of them.
I do watch a lot of YouTube though, there are really great creators in lots of niche communities, there is also a lot of slop and crap, but it can be avoided, at least for now, although Google is slowly driving me up the wall with some of their stupid decisions that make no sense, even they aren’t benefiting from them.
Google drives me up a wall with their search engine the most. AI bs to hide the fact that SEO and paid promotions make it hard to find anything anymore 😒
based <3
I wanted to sign up for pixelfed but now finding out there’s no dark mode makes me not want to.
Please understand that some of us with neurodivergence can’t handle light mode, it’s too straining on the eyes and physically hurts.
iOS has had smart invert capabilities for several years now.
On Android it’s trivial to install a dark mode browser extension and I think some versions also have smart invert too.
I can’t tell if you are being sarcastic;* I absolutely understand the plight but there have been tools to support you using any app without a native dark mode. If having to change a couple settings is more of a turn-off for people than the privacy nightmare that’s every corporate app… well I think that exposes your priorities pretty well.(*edit: apologies, you were being sincere. i have seen people use similar language to be hateful and ableist on the internet so i felt the need to cover all my bases but now that i know you were being genuine i retract that.)

I’m unaware of these features as I’m used to setting dark mode in each app but your overall comment reeks of ableism - I am neurodivergent, and I have to use my phone in dark mode. I had a TBI as a teenager leading to permanent light sensitivity and migraines and I’m also on the spectrum.
Also I’m banned from Instagram, so no, it’s not about priorities and even if it were, accessibility comes first.
i’m sorry you feel impinged on by me suggesting features that i and plenty of my neurodivergent or visually impaired acquaintances find to be helpful. features you admit you didn’t know about and might actually be helpful just as they have been for me.
you do not need to find them helpful because no accessibility system is perfect. but no need to call me ableist. that’s just fucking cringe. :( have a good one and maybe be nicer to people.
“b-b-but corporation bad!”
No shit people, corporations are badbut some are worse and some are better. Not that that is even the topic of discussion, this is clearly about spaces people exist in.
i wish i could pin this comment 🙃 thx for being one of the people who actually reads the post before commenting
Cringe app
cringe post
cringe everything
skill issue
That’s not what that means…
how else are they supposed to do it?
Is LGBTQ+ content not restricted/shadow banned there? 31 hearts and 1 comment isn’t really a lot.
If Twitter took away the restricted flag, would anyone have known typing “cisgender” is blacklisted? Most corporate social media don’t publish what is or isn’t restricted.
Plus China officially encourages “”““traditional””“” gender roles since their demographic crisis will come crashing down soon, with LGBTQ+ centers and clubs being shut down by the government.
I was wondering this as well and have been incredibly surprised how different the landscape is from my assumptions. Their algorithm very quickly understood my identity and preferences and started mixing in a good amount of wlw content with just an overflow of positive comments and engagement. I was also super happy to see creators that I enjoy being welcomed and praised on the platform - creators which 100% of the time have people leave the most unkind comments on their posts. There’s one in particular, a man who showcases and slays in his dresses, which I’ve yet to see one negative comment towards. Time will tell how long things stay this way!
I got Chappel Roan and Sabrina Carpenter content within like 20 minutes of scrolling I felt so at home
Good question. Here’s one from the same account with 16k likes. Any restrictions on LGBT content is not significantly worse than we already see from Meta and TikTok.
Re: the rest of your comment, yeah fuck the CCP as I said in OP. Just giving credit where due and a lot of people (like yourself) make a couple of (understandable) assumptions that are not backed up by any experience I have had yet.
People are really naive. I bet maos little red book has a special mode for people on the other side of the great firewall. China wants to look good to create soft power, they don’t want us to see all the tofu buildings collapsing they want us to see a girl living to western standards, not how the average Chinese lives
Do you think the Chinese gov planned this and has been preparing for this? Like they couldn’t just curate an entire social media sites worth of content just on the off chance that millions of Americans go there out of spite. Spite is rather unpredictable.
You know, when you put your app on the App Store you have to chose the region you want the app to be available in. So as rednote is available in the west they are prepared. And it’s not that hard to implement as their recommendation algorithm is fkn great, just look at the likes the OG post got and OP commented another post by the same account that got a magnitude more engagement. Apparently many also tested to post pro Taiwan or tiamin square content and their accounts got banned. China has a well documented history of massive censorship and media control, I mean their great firewall should give you an idea of what they do. It’s naive to think they release an App to the west without control of what it’s shown.
How would they implement what you’re claiming within the matter of days since red book took off?
A whole lot of this comment is western cope. And I’m not even a CCP fan, I’m an anarchist.
You’re not an anarchist your an idiot. Obviously they were prepared for this, you have to specify the regions your app is available. So the fact rednote is even available should be enough evidence. I mean a TikTok ban was talked about for months so they weren’t Surprised that a lot of people switched platform.
Xi just generated millions of AI Chinese to fool the West, what an elegant move!
Guess you can’t see beyond your lifelong propaganda, the truth might hurt sometimes but its necessary
He doesnt need to, there are millions creating contant, he just needs to order the company to filter to show “appropiate contant”
What’s funny is China did their demo crisis to themselves with the one child policy
I’ve been getting some major astroturfing vibes around here lately.
sinophobia so real that people going to see whats going on and reporting back looks like astroturfing to you
careful homie, i understand your mindset but it can lead dangerous places
As someone who speaks the language (poorly) and has been several times and has family in China, I can concur this post feels a bit cringe.
China is not a champion of LGBT rights. It’s tolerated in the cities, but if that’s the thing you care about most then the west in quite a bit farther ahead on the issue in general.
China is not a champion of LGBT rights. It’s tolerated in the cities,
You can literally say that about America right now as they’re rolling back our rights as we speak.
No, you can’t yet say that about America right now. We are very concerned it’s headed that way, but we’re not there yet. There are actually laws in place to protect LGBTQ+ folks still.
But yes… The biggots are trying a fresh wave of cruelty, and one of their worst is about to take power.
Still, as of right now, America is lightyears ahead of China in this area.
It’s really not from where I’m sitting in Australia. The main difference between the two is that the US has far less centralised laws. So you do have states where trans rights are solid, but then you have states like Florida, which is far worse than China where trans rights are just not really talked about.
I seriously would not boast that it is lightyears.
I agree but you should not equivocate “cringe” with “astroturfing.” Astroturfing is a real and malicious thing. I’m just posting stuff I have seen people be adamant cannot possibly exist.
I would never say the CCP is a champion of LGBT rights as I have repeated throughout this post but that message clearly didn’t make it all the way up everyone’s high horses.
It’s going to be so interesting seeing how all of this plays out. Will meta succeed in reclaiming their market share? Will a new app take the throne? Will congress just keep banning any app that is too popular and not under the american oligarchys control? Will trump somehow leverage this into him being the one to save tiktok? Will loops UI ever be good enough to compete? Only time will tell.
What a strange timeline we live in lol
Will meta succeed in reclaiming their market share?
Probably not, nobody trusts them especially not z and alpha
Will a new app take the throne?
Maybe. Maybe it’s red book?
Will congress just keep banning any app that is too popular and not under the american oligarchys control?
100% but they’re slow moving dinosaurs
Will trump somehow leverage this into him being the one to save tiktok?
Probably
Will loops UI ever be good enough to compete?
Hope so
I agree with all your predictions to my questions lol.
Though i don’t think rednote will actually take the place of tiktok, I think that’s mostly a protest migration & something else will take the top spot – if tiktok actually stays banned. I do think there’s a chance trump will choose not to enforce the ban in a meaningful way because he knows it will rally quite a few young and nieve voters into his camp (plus he’d probably get a hefty payoff).
I think if they adopt automated translation to English and back to Chinese it has potential to take off
right! like i know the stakes are high but this new development has gotten me very invested from an almost entertaiment perspective. there’s huge potential here for change and i have no clue if it’s gonna be positive or negative.
I felt similar about Musk buying Twitter. I created an account for the first time after never wanting to use the app before, just so I could watch shit go down. I got banned for dunking on transphobes after a few months 🤣
that’s so dope XD if finding actual community on RedNote doesn’t pan out i’ll probably just start posting anti-authoritarian till im banned :P
I was honestly surprised by the ban. Elong hadn’t even been in charge long enough to account for the change entirely. I wasn’t even being that hostile, just tearing into them like I do here when people spout bs. They just reported me because I made them look like fools.
Because politeness and upholding social norms is the number one thing for liberals. You can’t dunk on transphobes, that’s impolite and ban worthy to libs who care more about decorum than protecting the vulnerable.
Same! I think it is nice to have something developing that isn’t as overwhelmingly frightening as lots of the things in the works right now. Like this is high stakes and says alot about corruption in America, but like at least it’s not something that could potentially put me or my loved ones in harms way.
well put!
obligatory yapdollar
holy shit first yapdollar reference i have seen on fedi. imagine a universe where pixelfed loops takes off with yapdollar as a leading creator.
What is yap dollar
Hoo boy am I angry about this …
😈 excellent 😈
So any guesses on whether the OP is paid in RMB or some other currency?
I was paid $30,000 USD for this post by Mark Zuckerberg himself. He told me he wants every foreign app to be permabanned from the US internet so we all have to move to Threads :3
Hope it was in cash.
cold and hard, like his reptilian brain
im sorry what the fuck is a halfjoke?
a joke that’s half serious here’s the definition
