Wtf is up with the ABC coverage of New Year’s? We only get Sydney’s footage on a one hour delay, rather than any coverage of the Brisbane celebrations? Lame!

Still, ABC did better than all the other stations, which had no coverage of it whatsoever.

The worst part about New Year’s is all the lost dog (and horses, and cats, and other pets) posts in the local Facebook groups.

Even worse are the found dog posts - deceased, rushed to vet after being hit by a car, sighted ploughing through a barbed wire fence in a panic, etc.

Fireworks are a pretty shit way of celebrating I reckon. Do light or drone shows or something if we must stand around in parks like primitives oogabooging with slack jaws at the big sparks in the sky.

… Starting off 2025 as bitter and twisted as I finished 2024 lol

Honestly I’m not a fan of fireworks. I find them quite dull—and drone shows are even more dull. But pets are not a good reason to do away with fireworks in my opinion. People need to keep their damn animals indoors. Especially on a night as predictable as New Year’s.

The environmental impact is far worse by comparison, but no one gives a fuck about the environment so there’s no point bringing that up.

I find the environment a much more convincing argument than pets. I’m curious exactly where it sits in comparison to other causes like beef, flights, and energy generation though.

I’m not sure how a food source, transportation, and a necessary utility can possibly be compared to brainless entertainment though.

Look, I eat a lot of beef and have flown more than my fair share already and probably will continue to. But it’s not like going vegetarian—or at least cutting your meat back to only chicken and fish—isn’t a perfectly reasonable option. And international flights might not be replaceable, but Brisbane–Sydney–Melbourne was the busiest air corridor in the world pre-COVID and could have easily been replaced by high speed rail—as could similarly popular routes in the US (and Europe largely already has). Ditto renewable electricity. I think it’s reasonable to compare the scale of each as one of many factors.
