The map shows the Showgrounds as an option, but sadly the article makes no mention of them other than as a temporary relocation of cricket and AFL games while Gabba reconstruction might be happening.
Personally, I’d like to see the Showgrounds seriously considered as an option for an Olympic venue. Here are the options as I see it:
Victoria Park/Barrambin
- Not especially close to public transport, but not terrible.
- Would result in a large loss of public greenspace.
- Would reduce amenity of excellent plans already in place by BCC for the park.
Gabba
- Could be a knockdown rebuild or a refurbishment.
- Will be well-serviced by PT once the new line opens next year.
- Would require relocating the school if a knockdown rebuild. (And possibly even if refurbishment, to make room for warm-up track.)
- At least minor refurbishments are necessary soonish anyway, just for the cricket and AFL.
Showgrounds
- Excellent PT access already.
- Drastically under-utilised space currently.
- Not being seriously considered for some reason.
Eagle Farm Racecourse
- Excellent PT access already.
- Would upset people who like to abuse animals and prey on vulnerable people.
- Extremely close to the planned athlete’s village.
- Not being seriously considered for obvious reasons (see point 2).
Northshore Hamilton
- A pipe dream thrown up by some development firm to promote themselves.
QSAC
- Too far away.
- Too small.
- Terrible PT access.
Don’t host it makes the most sense
