Second-to-last time we ran a sausage sizzle, we were brow-beaten by a Vegan who was upset that we were not offering Vegan sausages. His whole family was vegan and we were discriminating against them.

The next time, we got a separate grille, a separate chiller and a pack of twelve vegan sausages. He came with his family, and true to his word, he bought a vegan sausage for himself.

His family members all decided not to have their sausage straight away, but to come back afterwards.

They did come back later, without their father/husband and we threw out 11 vegan sausages at the end of the day.

I’m laughing at your down vote. You did exactly what vegans want you to do, you provided a totally independent totally clean option. And yet they still download you for trying…

People, if you want to see change, vote with your dollars not your dissent!

I know a lot of vegans, and most of them are great people.

there’s a certain percentage that see the cruelty of factory farming and intensive agriculture as a problem that affects them, and therefore they want to see large changes to the entire system.

at first I was like: you don’t get to make my decisions for me.

but over time, I’m beginning to wonder if they’re right - whether it’s h5n1 tearing through factory farms and dairies (!), crazy pollution from fertilizers or over-application of antibiotics making the food dangerous to everyone…

but then again we can’t feed everyone without this system. or at least are convinced we can’t.

hard subject if you actually give both sides a long look.

My solution was to eat less meat but only get local high quality stuff from the butcher.

              Fish isn’t much better.

It is best to have a balanced diet with protein from multiple different good quality sources. We don’t need much protein in our diet.

I used to work as a butcher and honestly, it’s the industrial meat manufacturing complex that is to blame. That is where all the cruelty exists. Toxic masculinity encourages minimum wage workers in a dirty job to have fun at the expense of the animals. They need to fight for this belief because if they start to feel any humanity towards the animals, they will breakdown.

Toxic masculinity in our western society demands high meat content in meals.

I’m quite happy to have meat with meals every now and then, I’ve seen how the sausage is made and I also appreciate how the sausage tastes.

I will never buy cheap “budget” sausages for myselfbut I will quite happily buy and eat one at Bunnings or on Election Day to support community groups.

I will have one at a BBQ (with a generous amount of salad) and I will help polish off the last ones to stop the dog getting too fat.
