Weird. I love LLMs for brainstorming. It’s like being able to talk to a library.
I agree, although the way I read it, I think the author of the article tries to let the LLM do all the brainstorming? Instead of a tool/extension for your own brain to spark ideas? I mean every input is good for brainstorming ideas, also bad input.
I’ve used them for that purpose. They’re not very good at making suggestions, but sometimes a sounding board that bounces back bad ideas is just what you need to spark a good one.
It’s pretty good at telling you when an idea you do have has limitations. So that’s nice.
Off topic but man, the term sounding has been forever ruined for me
How so? And this better not be a sexual thing.
Bad news, it is
A LLM won’t probably produce a novel idea but brainstorming is a lot about distilling previous knowledge where a LLM-assist is very beneficial
I think the start up example is a special case. Is an LLM good at coming up with random plot points for the next hook in my dnd campaign? Maybe. Is an LLM good at coming up with an actually new idea for a brand new start up company? Certainly not.
If something is actually a new idea, an LLM will not come up with it. If something is just a recycled/rehashed idea, sure, LLM could come up with it.
