So I’ve been noticing most of the cashiers at big supermarket keep asking customers to use self checkout but little do they know that these numbers are being recorded and once executive of that big supermarket see customers have learnt to use self checkout then they will get rid of cashiers and replace with the self checkout. Same goes for cashiers at Petrol station, today I went to fuel up and had an expired voucher. She gave me a discount and then immediately canceled the transaction and said the voucher is expired. At that time I was thinking she’s trying to save $2 for a trillion dollar company who’s paying her minimum wage. People should use common sense.

Make the minimum wage something people can live on and then we can talk about them making poor decisions.

Why would anyone making that level of income put any effort or thought into the work? Their labor is almost always worth more than what they’re being paid in places that adhere to the US Federal Minimum Wage of $7.25. You know why the service is better at Disney than a local carnival? Cause they get paid a hell of a lot better to do the job.

      Hence use common sense.

Make the minimum wage something people can live on and then we can talk about them making poor decisions

      Doesn’t work like that.

Businesses do analysis of how many people use self checkout and how many customers go to a cashier. If cashiers are serving more people , they get to keep the job.

If not, another self checkout to replace you

I thought this way but have been told numerous times by retail workers that they like the machines, that they were overworked before they came in and now the workload is manageable.

Capitalism by design will always overwork labor. In this example, the employees finally feel their workload easing but soon enough there will be fewer of them doing the same work they’re doing now and the individuals that remain employeed will be overworked again.

Now as someone who has worked retail, usually (not always) it’s because there is a line (some arbitrary number between 3-6) that is too many people in line. So we take you to the next one. But you only need one person to run so many self checkout machines. Typically 4-6. As for the coupon. That is probably the one time she’s really allowed to tell a customer no, when typically she has to honor more or less whatever a customer tells her to do, no matter how stupid.

Comfortably-off customers casting aspersions on “minimum wage workers” are the absolute pits.

There is lots to say here but you are too clueless to say any of it. FFS

in that vein, I find it odd that some businesses that could really use self checkout aisles dont have them - like Target - they’re always understaffed and there’s always long lines. like, just install some self checkout machines already, jeez.

Well yeah, self checkout will probably take over in the long run. I remember going into McDonalds 5 years ago and they had an employee standing there encouraging me to use the ordering screens. All I could think was “you poor bastard, they have you standing there encouraging customers to no longer need you.” But if that’s what the boss pays them to do, either they quit or they do it.
