Wow, that’s a lot of people speeding though school zones. If that doesn’t get people to slow down, don’t think the road work cameras will deter drivers either. All I can say, is that the TMR is going to have a massive influx of funds starting next month when the cameras go live.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

New cameras in Queensland that were meant to nab speeding drivers at roadworks sites have not issued a single fine more than 18 months after the road safety initiative was supposed to begin.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) said the cameras were expected to start issuing fines next month once operational trials of the technology finished.

Asked how it was determined where the cameras would go, TMR said the department liaised with industry to identify roadworks sites where speeding posed a problem to worker safety.

Meanwhile, TMR has released new data to ABC Radio Brisbane that shows new speed cameras attached to school zone signs have issued over 10,000 fines since they became operational in August.

Between August 7 and March 22, the school zone cameras gave out 7,105 fines to drivers caught speeding in the lower tier of up to 10kph over the limit.

“The pilot will be evaluated to determine the road safety benefits and technical performance of the technology,” the TMR spokesperson said.
