I’m loving Sync so far. I used the official reddit app ever since I was on Reddit. I sure was missing out.

I saw on the left bar there’s two options “Remove ads” and “Sync Ultra”. What’s the difference? I understand ultra is a subscription that gets ad free browsing and more. However, remove ads looks to be a single purchase “add-on”, i.e. no subscription. Is that the case? That would be nice down the line when sync for lemmy gets an official stable release.

There’s also a price difference. Ultra is 1.99$/mo or 16.99$/yr, and remove ads is 12.99$.

Remove ads is 22 euros here. That’s a massive difference from the old app. Almost ten times more I believe?

      Crying in $34 Aussie dollaydoos.

A bit of a surprise; I know I was lucky to get the old Sync pro app for under $2 a decade ago, but wow.

Lemmy still has a lot less users than reddit. The dev can’t rely on tens of thousands of users to buy the app for $1 each. I think he’s doing a great job with this app and I don’t mind supporting him.

Also, the addition of Sync to the lemmy ecosystem will draw a ton of new people in and help grow the platform.

I understand that I got a magnificent deal on Reddit Sync - I think it was on sale at the time.

I was ready to happily drop $15 on the ad free, but this is more than double that.

It’s unfortunate that the price is up, but it’s better than spending for a subscription for ad removal.

It’s the overtime that’s bullshit. Especially when it’s “mandatory” and 1.5x hourly or more.

The pool of people willing to buy an app for Lemmy is a lot smaller than Reddit, so it makes sense to jack up the price.

Is it though? It’s the price of a meal at a moderately priced restaurant or less than 2 months subscription of a streaming service, and you only ever have to pay for it once.

How is Lemmy an “anticapitalist project”. I know the devs political orientation, but tech is tech, not really politically aligned by itself.
Besides, if it were anticapitalist, they should not have used the GPLv3 as their license, as it explicitly allows third parties to profit off the project.

My question is, what costs are associated with it? The app was essentially built, the dev needed to make some changes and link to the new API which should be free now? Generally curious, because I previously paid $3 for the pro app on Reddit.

Well, let’s just do the math: the original pro version has over 100,000 downloads over it’s 10 years of life. At $3, that means the dev earn at least $300,000 over 10 years, minus 30% play store fee. Let’s say they earn at least $27,000 per year, which is almost twice the minimum wage at the very least.

Now lets do the math for Lemmy version: some metrics say we have 1 million users. Let’s assume 10% of them are active users (100,000), and among those active users, lets assume 10% of them (10,000) buy Sync for Lemmy at $3 one time purchase (a very generous estimate). This means the dev will get $27,000 (after 30% cut from play store) from those users, ever. With this amount of money, the dev will need to earn their living somewhere else and abandon their app after a year.

I assume the dev didn’t just make the app and think he can just retire, it was just one income stream for other stuff they develop and sell, but point taken.

I bought Sync pro for $2 in 2013, but I assume it went up significantly in more recent years.

Yeah a bit steep - I’m hoping it’s a bad calculation. OP said it’s 12.99$, and other’s have said 19.99$, so I have no idea where EUR22 comes from.
