I’ve had a similar issue in the past (KDE Plasma 5), which was perfectly solved by this solution, but, unfortunately, since updating to KDE Plasma 6, it has reappeared in the form of the mouse cursor changing its size when it hovers over certain applications.
For example:
Small cursor:
Large cursor:
I have so far observed this behaviour with KeePassXC (v2.7.6, Flatpak), Nextcloud Desktop (v3.12.1, Flatpak), and KWrite (v23.08.5, Flatpak).
I have tried reverting the afformentioned workaround for the previous issue, but then the old issue returns, only without this new sizing issue. How do I fix this?
- Operating System: Arch Linux
- KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.1
- KDE Frameworks Version: 6.0.0
- Qt Version: 6.6.2
- Kernel Version: 6.7.8-arch1-1 (64-bit)
- Graphics Platform: Wayland
Update (2024-03-09T00:20Z)
This may be an issue with Flatpak. An update to KWrite’s Flatpak just came out, then I ran KWrite to check if the issue was fixed, and it was — the mouse cursor is no longer enlarged when it hovers over the app. I suspect that when an update rolls out for the other two applications the issue will be fixed, but I’ll just have to wait and see.
You must report bugs to https://bugs.kde.org. Not here. Thread locked.
i have the same problem. for example in kitty (which uses wayland) the cursor becomes larger.
Solution copied from my other comment:
happened to me too! but I solved it. It happens when using cursor themes that aren’t updated for kde 6. You can find one that is or use the default breeze cursor like I have decided to do
This isn’t a solution. I am using the Breeze cursors. Specifically, I am using Breeze Light.
sorry it didn’t work for you
Out of curiosity, is kitty installed as a Flatpak?
I don’t have a solution for you, but my immediate thought was that the background was farther away. It’d be kinda cool.
Is the app in question an XWayland app? If it is, you need to change the setting for scaling in the Display Settings to something the XWayland apps like (can’t remember which worked best for me).

How do I find this info?

I’ve never modified the scaling, though — It’s at the default 100%.
I think they meant the “let apps apply scaling themselves” setting.
I tried setting that too, but it didn’t fix it.
Oh well, maybe it’s a new bug then… Guess I’ll find out over the weekend when I upgrade as well.
I have the same issue, even at Plasma 5 I’d have my mouse pointer change. This happens only on Wayland though
Same issue here, Plasma 6 has broken Flatpak theming in general for me.
Both the cursor size differs between native and Flatpak applications and also the dark mode is not applied correctly in some applications.
For example, VS Code in Flatpak has white context menus even though dark mode is activated:
Yeah, I’m also pretty sure that this is a Flatpak issue — an update for one of the affected Flatpaks came out, and it’s issue with the cursor is now fixed. I suspect that when an update for the other applications rolls out, then they will also be fixed. I’m not entirely sure what went wrong in the Flatpaks with Plasma 6, though — it’s rather interesting. Maybe something got changed in one of the desktop portals?

I fixed a similar cursor issue that started with Plasma 6 in KeepassXC (not the Flatpak version though) by installing
extra/breeze5

, suggested in this thread. Maybe it will help the Flatpaks too?happened to me too! but I solved it. It happens when using cursor themes that aren’t updated for kde 6. You can find one that is or use the default breeze cursor like I have decided to do
