I noticed that this instance seems to have community creation locked to admin users, though nothing in the rules / sidebar mentions this.
Would you be open to allowing users to create their own communities here in the future? Perhaps once there are some more active users to avoid diluting the communities we already have?
I’m very new to the fediverse and lemmy, so please let me know if this isn’t something that would be feasible for this instance.
I’m happy to create new communities, but haven’t allowed it for non-admins as I’d like to avoid sprawl. Also there are already lots of communities established on other instances, chances are what you’re looking for already exists. I’d like to keep the ones here focused on Australian interests.
Turns out it is right there! Thanks for letting me know.
I only asked because I was interested in understanding a bit more about lemmy and how things work in this particular instance.
I’ve always been a bit of a lurker on other platforms and forums so I’d feel bad requesting or creating a community and then sitting in silence waiting for someone else to liven the place up.
All good. Let me know if you want one created.
Think you could create a Newcastle community? I’ll try and be a little active there.
Maybe the icon could be the good ol’ giant penis backed by a lovely sunset:
Cheers!
To see an example of why I’ve opted to not allow everyone to create communities… take a look at what is happening over on lemmy.world
A small number of users have created a crazy number of communities. Page after page of communities with zero posts.
Looks like you made the right call, I think what you’re doing here is working well! Nice work btw.
