Neither option really discourages bots or recognizing bots, but I do take space in the fact that one creates a slight inconvenience, even if it just means 1 less account every week because another bot already took that randomly generated string of letters and numbers.

Randomly generating names is trivial to implement. I don’t think that Reddit suggesting a name itself really saves the spammers much work.
