I carry a Leatherman Rebar when I know I’ll need a few more tools in my pocket. It’s only a few times a month but when I do it’s indispensable.
The size is both small enough to fit comfortably in my pocket while be substantial enough to feel like a real tool. The tools I use the most are the pliers, Philips screw driver, and wire cutters.
This model locks the tools while they are open which I prefer but it lacks scissors, a replaceable bit driver and has, in my opinion, a light duty knife.
If you eventually buy another you should look at the Knifeless Rebar. You lose the blade, which you carry separately, but gain scissors.
Honestly, that’s an interesting idea. I don’t really like collecting but if I ever had to buy another one that could be an option.
I always carry at least one good knife too. I’ve been pleased with the Knifeless Rebar as a companion tool.
My main multitool these days is a Leatherman Free P4, but I replaced both blades with other third-party tools (from ZapWizard).
What is the quality of the 3rd party tools like? I’d be interested in the scalpel holder and the bit holder. I don’t need the Free P4 saw ever so replacing it would be just fine.
The tools are 3D printed in metal. The designs are excellent and the tools work quite well. I’ve been using them for at least six months and haven’t had any problems.
I got the bit holder, the T-Shank saw blade holder, and the scalpel holder. They more than make up for what they replaced, except for the blades. Since I always carry both a plain edge and a serrated blade, it’s all a trade up.
ZapWizard was also very helpful.
I just got this exact one. I had to oil it up a bit because it was really stiff but now it works great. I ditched the huge sheath it came with and bought the og leather one on ebay. I wear it on my belt and it’s so compact that i hardly notice that it’s there.
9/10: would buy again but I’ll probably never have to.
I had the same problem. The oxide makes it gritty and stiff so I also added oil. Luckily, just by using it over time most of the moving parts are smooth. I agree that I’d probably also buy it again. It fits my main needs perfectly.
why did you choose rebar over wave?
The biggest reason was form factor then price. I wanted something that could fit my pocket comfortably. I already have a dedicated pocket knife and screw driver so while it would be nice to have better options those weren’t too much of a concern.
I love leatherman stuff but I just know, myself, i’m gonna leave it on site one day. I haven’t seen the rebar before it’s really nice.
Leaving behind a tool is never a good day. Especially when you don’t notice untill the next time you need it!
