What do you all use TrueNAS for? I’d love to hear how it’s being used in other peoples systems!

    AdGuard, Plex, Makemkv, Paperless-NG, and regular SMB Share for me and the wife.

    Though recently I got RomM and emulatorjs set up and now the retro collection is starting as I’m making sure to backup all my gb/gbc/gba and older disc games.

    Also hoping to get wire guard or another vpn setup at some point but when I’m out I’m usually busy at work.

      That’s awesome! I tried to get emulatorjs to work but never could and ended up just downloading a local emulator on my desktop.

      Regarding wire-guard, I wouldn’t be too worried if you’re using the Truecharts apps, it’s actually super simple to get setup.

          That’s awesome, thank you for posting a guide! I took a quick look through, and it looks great, I’ll definitely be sure to use this resource to get EmuJS running for my TrueNAS Scale server when I get the time.

    Just got a system up and running. Silverstone cs382 chassis with 6 12tb drives. 4 are in a striped mirror set and the other two are mirrored. I wanted protection and speed. The os and docker apps each have their own 1tb SSD. Rest of the hardware is old from eBay.

    I’m coming from open media vault so although I’m not running anything but rsync now, I will be setting up a wordle clone, an intranet, and backup for family photos. I run some of the same stuff as you but I’ll have to look up what the rest are. Tailscale is something I’ve wanted to do but haven’t dug into it yet.

    I may set up a task list for the kids chores as well.

    Plex and all the associated things.

    Not sure what else yet as I’m still setting up replication and stuff to protect what I have first.

    I use my box solely as a storage server with SFTP, Samba, and NFS. When I first built it about ten years ago, I ran a few jails for Plex and Syncthing (I think, it’s been a long time), but I’ve since moved them to containers on a NUC running Proxmox. PVE uses the TrueNAS box as storage for backups.

      I’m going to be setting up Proxmox for the first time soon, and I’m looking for a solution for managing my storage (nothing fancy for now, aiming for about 50TB across 5 disks, with off-site backup). I’m considering my options for whether I should use Proxmox to manage the storage or if it would be better to use TrueNAS for that. I’m curious if you’d have any opinions on the choice.

        I like having storage on a dedicated box. I’ve been using TrueNAS/FreeNAS for about ten years and I’m happy with it. In my case, when I was first building the storage box, I wasn’t really looking for a hypervisor like PVE for running other services so FreeNAS made sense. I used jails for a while before acquiring the NUC I have PVE running on now and migrated everything from jails to containers, and I’m now deliberate about not running anything on the TrueNAS box that isn’t directly related to storage.
