It’s not that weird, in the US radical politics is a niche hobby since we don’t actually have concrete, visible evidence that we can improve anyone’s life. We have the beginnings of it with the resurgence of unions, but unions and socialism aren’t seen as synonymous anymore.
And niche hobbies draw lonely, weird people. And there are a lot more lonely maladjusted guys than women, anecdotally. Or maybe I’m projecting too much
