This is an update to https://hexbear.net/post/281447.
So this past Christmas, I finally got all of the parts together and put together my new Team Red PC.
It’s beautiful! All black parts (I don’t like unicron vomit). I went with a Ryzen 5600X instead of the 5800X3D (cheaper) and got that RX 6700 XT. I’m rocking 16 GB of DDR4 3200 RAM.
For the OS, I’m running a variant of Fedora called Nobara, made by Glorious Eggroll. It’s made for Linux gaming because I am a filthy . The default DE is KDE Plasma.
I ran Phoronix Test Suite and used the Unigen Valley benchmark. I consistently got over 248 fps at 1080p 60 Hz. Can’t go any higher until I swap out my monitor (aka my TV).
Anyways, Cheers y’all! (Pardon the mess. Output from Neofetch. Edited of course.) (EDIT: Edited for grammar and readability.)

Have fun with your new pc
Thanks! I am!
If you dont mind the question. What games are you gonna play on it ?
I don’t mind answering.
It’s mostly games that I have paid for on Steam. So I have Cyberpunk 2077, Disco Elysium, ESO, & Guild Wars 2 installed (I installed the Steam version of GW2, but I learned a trick to use the GW2 launcher so that I could use my ANet account).
I have a few others but I’m trying to focus on those games for now, as I’m really slow at getting through games, storyline-wise.
Damn you, Steam Sales!
I upgraded to that same CPU/GPU combo last year and it’s soooo good.
Nice! How has it been working for you? Are you using Linux or Windows?
Using Windows for the most part since I haven’t been able convince anyone else to switch to Linux. I’ve used a bookable drive on occasion though. Mostly use Manjaro, but I’ve tried Fedora on it as well. It’s great on either Windows (10)or Linux though.
Right on!
I still have my old Windows partition on a 2TB portable drive as a “just-in-case” but I haven’t needed to go back to Windows yet.
I am happy that both Linux and Windows works for your system!
Awesome! This is pretty similar to my current HW build. I’d love to hear about your experience with Nobara once you’ve been running it for a month or more.
Sure. It’s been about 3 weeks so I can kinda give you a preliminary report.
The TL;DR - Nobara just fucking works. Especially for gaming.
I started out with the GNOME build of Nobara 38. It was smooth and buttery but I didn’t like the interface. What it does for task switching left me a bit miffed as I had to superkey-tab through a lot of open windows. Right before Christmas, GE released Nobara 39 with KDE Plasama as the official default version. So I took it upon myself to switch and it has been perfect! Anything I thought I’d miss by not having Windows has been addressed. I don’t do much productivity work, mostly play games and web surf. No need for a Windows license for that.
I don’t play CS, CoD, Fornite, games like that which use Easy AntiCheat, so no need for Windows there either (although I know CS is one of those games that’s a Linux port). And knowing that EAC works in Linux (via Proton), if I want to try games with EAC, then I can.
So for now, it has been so far, so very good.
Hell yeah, I actually have a very similar setup myself after doing some upgrades this week. I was running a Ryzen 5 3600 and RX 6650xt but just switched to the 5600x3D and RX6800xt after getting some deals on used parts. It’s so nice getting to crank the settings on all my games 😎
Also I use fedora kde btw
I didn’t know they had a AM4 5600x3D. I got the 5800x3D and even the most demanding games barely see 20%. Mostly GPU bound. They hit it out of the park with those ones. As long as you got a quality thermal paste (corsair XTM70 has been doing a fine job for me) and a good cooling solution you should be fine for most everything.
