Hey all! League of Legends is currently playable on Linux thanks to wine-ge-lol-8-27.
This version of wine is available on Lutris and all of the installer scripts available have been updated to use it. I removed and installed the game again, just to be safe, and it works perfectly for me on Debian 12 except for usual slow client.
Quick guide:
- Open Lutris
- Remove League of Legends (Right click the game’s icon -> “Remove”)
- Install the game again following the usual instructions. (Choose the right script for your region, do not log in before the first download finishes and you reopen the game, etc.)
And, well, granted the game already worked for you before the disaster, you should be good to go!
As for the Reddit Megathread, it hasn’t been updated since November 24th, that’s more than a month ago. This version of wine is available since December 14th.
It’s very misleading that both our website (the first result on Google for “League of legends on Linux”), which links to the Megathread on the status page, still claims that the game is unplayable on Linux.
I myself took a week or so to notice that the game is working, but some people even got banned for using the wrong package and a big “Hey guys DON’T use wine-lol-staging
from the AUR, it’s getting people banned!!! Permanently!!!” on the Megathread would at least have stopped more people from using it at the time. PLEASE update it.
We even have an active Discord server now (I’m not sure I’m allowed to link it here), which is how I got to know and understand most of this.
So, here’s an open letter to acenomad/TheAcenomad (from what I could gather, they’re the only owner and moderator):
I’ve defended the move to Kbin with other comments I’ve made in other threads, and frankly, I’m embarrassed about it, because right after that, you have been silent, inactive both on Reddit and here on Kbin. You even wrote the following on the Megathread:
A further more detailed announcement will follow as well as the eventual full reopening of the subreddit.
But so far, nothing.
League of Legends is one of the most played games in the world, and thus, a huge barrier of entry for new desktop Linux users is information on how to make it work, or if it can even work at all (gamers are a huge portion of desktop PC users).
No shame if you want to move on from this community; we all move on from some of our interests. But if that’s the case, please let people that care take over, or alternatively, engage with the community and help valuable information be more easily spread, like we thought you were gonna do with the updates.
I would have loved it you took the move to Kbin seriously, because I still believe in the protest’s objectives, but it seems like you have just bailed out on difficult times for the community.
Given the circumstances, I suggest updating the website, updating the Megathread, reopening the subreddit, and bringing in new mods.
If this continues, the community will just create another subreddit, and maybe that would be for the better, but it would be a shame to see this one go down like this.
Then again, maybe you just actually died. I hope not, but you know, peace.
Have a nice day, y’all.
I have been able to play with wine 9 or wine-ge-lol-8-26 for quite a while now. Installed with lolforlinuxinstaller (highly recommend).
I am also unsure why they “moved to kbin” if they had no intention of keeping the community updated via here. It’s not really “moving” at all, then.
They only deigned to post the megathread, period, on Reddit, and I feel that says it all about their attitude about moving here: They never took it that seriously.
I would personally rather the community be here; but if this choice is choosing no moderation, and no official updates, then it’s not really a true choice. I vastly prefer the fediverse and I’m not going back, but if they have no real intention of moving here, they should figure out what they are going to do. It’s been 6 months since Reddit showed its true face.
I think, in the end, the community will split off, yeah. Both here and on Reddit.
Thanks for updating the people here, I totally forgot to share the solution myself, whoops. Maybe I should post the way to update the runners that doesn’t require a reinstall, hahah. //sweats
Yup, completely agree
About what you’re going to post, you should absolutely do it, I’ve only ever used the Lutris method, so I have no idea how to help others that use other methods. I reinstalled my game on Lutris just to be safe, but I know there’s a way to change what wine version to use with an installation, does doing just that work? Or did the newest installation scripts change something else?
Also, link the post here when you finish it for everyone’s convenience, thanks!edit because I misinterpreted what you said haha
I don’t know whether a clean install changed anything but the runner, only changing the runner worked well for me. I also use League through Lutris, but I didn’t figure out how to find and add new runners easily until I figured it out for this, and I absolutely wished I had known how that worked earlier (because it would have saved me a lot of time in many scenarios. 8i )
I’ll try to post something coherent and get back to you. (Making words hard.)
Here it is, https://kbin.social/m/leagueoflinux/t/728889/How-to-Update-Your-Wine-Runner-to-8-27-Fix-Through
I’m hoping that is understandable or helpful for people ^^;
Thanks!
