Written by Billy Bragg in 1983, this song appeared on Bragg’s album Life’s A Riot With Spy Vs Spy. It remains one of his signature songs. Kirsty McColl covered this for indie label Stiff, in 1985, with some added lyrics written by Bragg for her version.

Kirsty was the daughter of folk singer Ewan MacColl and was married for a time to record producer Steve Lillywhite (The Pogues, XTC, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Talking Heads etc.) She shared vocals on The Pogues’ song Fairytale Of New York.

She tragically died at the age of 41, in 2000.
