I’ve done this pattern before. From what I remember attaching the four legs is fiddly as hell and the instructions aren’t the clearest. After frogging and remaking a few times I decided to fudge it like OPs wife. Turned out fine!
I almost always end up fudging things and just wing it. It turns out ok to me. The picture the OP posted looks adorable.
