What places have you found in this region that are interesting (or just have a nice view) but don’t have a formed or fully marked track leading to them?

A few that I have been too and liked follow:

  • Tinderry Peak - nice walk with some boulder scrambling as you approach the top of the mountain, ends atop a large boulder with a good 360 degree view.

  • Pierces Creek Waterfall - a good one to get to before El Nino sets in and dries out the creek again, it comes down a decent height and looks rather picturesque.

  • Blue Gum Hill - if you like Booroomba Rocks you’ll like this one because it’s the next hill north from there, also looks out towards Canberra from a rocky face, and is a little taller so gives what I think is a better view.

  • Billy Billy Rocks - a shorter walk (took me 4 and a bit hours return) with some quite large boulders to explore and a good view overlooking Tidbinbilla once you find the route up to the top of the topmost boulder. This one did have tape flags and cairns marking at least some of the most obvious route but they were hard enough to spot in the regrowth that I ended up not bothering and just made my own way.

I’d be interested to hear of other good less travelled places, particularly as it’s been a few months since I did any bushwalking and should really get around to doing some.

I find Geocaching to be the best way to find unmarked tracks and points of interest that are otherwise unmarked.

That’s a good point, I have had a play around with the idea of geocaching previously and there did seem to be a variety of ones in quite out of the way places. What turned me off was that (at least on geocaching.com) a lot of the remote ones seemed to require premium membership to get their location, and I didn’t feel like buying said membership. Maybe I should just stop being cheap or find some other geocaching website because this is a good idea for finding potential destinations.

There’s only the one main website unfortunately. It’s well worth the few dollars a year in my opinion. Canberra has a very active and engaged community, a lot of the premium caches are really worth the visit.
