Is there an easy way to brows/add new communities and follow users from within the app? I will fully accept “read the documentation” as an answer!! Thanks!!

I usually use lemmyverse.net or browse.feddit.de to look for new communities since it’s easier that way and so that I also see communities not yet federated with my instance. As far as I know for following users, that’s not possible, even in the actual Lemmy website instances.

Apart from that, if you want to browse or add new communities from the app, you can do that from the search tab.

Got it. Perhaps it’s the unfederated + my instance combination that is the hurdle that needs to be jumped to feel like a world wide community rather than a series of loosely connected silos. I’m happy with where I’m starting, but I picked an instance as an easy entry point. Thinking if I choose an instance too specific to one of my interests, I’d be limited to that topic specifically. I really just want it all to interconnect, and have seamless access to all. I know it’s new, and I’m new. I’ll be patient because this is what I’ve really wanted and I’ll wait for it to mature.

You can add communities via the search tab. I don’t think lemmy supports following users.

I don’t know if this is in the App Store version, but if you put in community@instance it’ll pull up communities even if your instance doesn’t know about it yet (this might not be in the App Store version, it’s new).

If that isn’t there yet, if your instance doesn’t know about it yet you still have to go to the web to force federation.

If your instance knows about the community, the search tab will find it and there’s a subscribe button there.
