In the migration to lemmy, this community’s admins have the chance to drop its startlingly racist name. Wasn’t funny back then, and it’s still not funny.

Why keep the nazi memorabilia around?

Not everything is about Nazis, not everything needs to be made about Nazis. It’s just a funny name.

This is the correct response. The other comments saying that “the name being a Nazi reference isn’t that big of a deal” is missing the point. Because it’s not a Nazi reference.

It’s just a self-aware joke about elitism in PC enthusiasts.

That doesn’t remove the connotation for larger audiences. A layman will never know those details and will read master race as being about race. The social context and history are irrelevant, it’s genuinely a dumb hill to die on.

i would say the language of “glory” and “master races” have been pretty sufficiently captured by nazis, maybe take a look around you.

I mean, haven’t you heard the discussions around PC vs Console?

It’s a tongue-in-cheek commentary of the vitriol surrounding that discussion, at least that was my take.

Exactly, it’s also from a classic yahtzee video. If your first thought when you hear this in very clear context is nazi crap over a pretty funny piece of gaming history then that sounds like a you problem, nobody should actually be offended by something as benign as this. If anything even if that is somehow the case, nazis should be laughed at and made fun of instead of holding ‘their words’ in some hush-hush revered taboo state. Just by making stupid threads like these and calling attention to it you’re giving them way too much power over you than they deserve to have.

Literally, they don’t. We live in a world where racists don’t joke anymore, they’re just openly racist. “proxy racist” isn’t even a thing. Find something else to stir up drama about.

    Yeah, agreed.

Most people probably used to see it as mocking fascism (and the tendencies of brand/ecosystem fanboys to act like little tyrants) but these days I’m pretty sure they (the actual fascists) just welcome the free publicity.

    Also, fuck Nazis.

Because that’s not the connection, and you didn’t make it because you’re not looking for silly reasons to get upset over. The symbolism of dark vs light, fire vs darkness predates modern notions of racism and according to a quick wiki check, the etymology of the word blacklist has no relation to the color of anyone’s skin either.

It was funny then and it’s even more funny now that cringe lords like you are getting worked up over it. Pull the stick out of your ass. If you want to find something to get offended about there’s plenty of real life racist shit.

The name is funny though, but if you don’t like it make a new magazine with a better name and put up better content so people switch over.

I didn’t even know someone had started one with the same name until this post.

God that’s an insufferable take, “if you don’t like it, leave without saying anything”? This is one post. A single one! I think speaking my mind is ok, and clearly some folks agree with me here. I think it’s a worthy discussion.

“Ignore and make your own” is honestly the most naive and spineless thing you can say. Imagine acting on that principle IRL, for instance, when people you consider your friends say or do something vile.

I really can’t agree that the name is funny. It affiliates everyone who wants to gather and talk about PCs with so-called “race scientists” who genocide in the name of a so-called “master race”. Can’t imagine wanting to associate with that, but its horrifying that people think it’s politically neutral to do so.

This thread violates Rule 2 - “Be respectful. Everyone should feel welcome here.”, and also violates parts of Rule 1. Locking it down as it got too political and mean.

Because it’s funny. There are at least three communities named “PC Gaming” (on lemmy.ml, lemmy.ca, and kbin.social) if it bothers you enough to want to leave.

I definitely agree with Yahtzee that in retrospect the “PC Gaming Master Race” name didn’t work out because the targets of the pejorative (as in elitist anti-console jackasses, not PC gamers as a whole) took it as an unironic badge of honour. “PC Gaming Dickslurp All-Stars” was funny.
