“We have no idea how this could have happened.”

That is the reaction Israeli officials have been giving today when I ask them how, with all its vast resources, Israeli intelligence did not see this attack coming.

Dozens of armed Palestinian gunmen were able to cross the heavily fortified border between Israel and the Gaza Strip, while thousands of rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel.

With the combined efforts of Shin Bet, Israeli domestic intelligence, Mossad, its external spy agency and all the assets of the Israel Defense Forces, it is frankly astounding that nobody saw this coming.

Or if they did, they failed to act on it.

Or if they did, they failed to act on it.

The only reason I can think why they’d fail to act would be to have a good reason to declare war…

      Yeah, same reason 9/11 happened…

The current government was losing their grip on control, but it times of war a lot of people start voting more conservative and xenophobic.

Cheney should have seen 9/11 coming, and that fuck is evil enough to have intentionally hide it so he could have his war in the middle east.

Nixon let Vietnam drag on to improve his re-election chances.

      Shit like this happens

          No it wasn’t.

Cheney set it up so intelligence agencies couldn’t communicate directly, they had to report to him, and he had to decide if something should be shared.

All the pieces were there, and the dots would have been connected. But Cheney didn’t let anyone else see all the dots.

It’s literally all on a single person, the “bureaucratic incompetence” stuff was just Republicans blaming “big government” so they wouldn’t blame the Bush administration

Actually the FBI and the CIA had the dots but didn’t share their information. Why? I don’t really know I leave it up to speculation, maybe it was the Bush Administration but to me its because the CIA doesn’t want the other US intelligence agencies to know about their business. Had they shared none of that happened but I bet it’s because they’re a fucked up organization. Then again the USA is a fucked up country.

              Why?

              I literally just said…

how does the story go with the gunshot and the dead lion and the guy with the umbrella? if it is basically impossible for Israel’s notorious “intelligence” to miss this, and it directly benefits israel’s push for more territory and new weapons, then maaaaaybe just maybe israeli defense DIDN’T miss the attack…

Who says it did? Maybe they just thought all these dead civilians was acceptable. Give them a justification. Not that they’ve ever needed one before.

Considering their prime minister is about to lose power and really doesn’t want to… might not be so far fetched. But all this is hypothesis and no one will really know for sure.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

With the combined efforts of Shin Bet, Israeli domestic intelligence, Mossad, its external spy agency and all the assets of the Israel Defense Forces, it is frankly astounding that nobody saw this coming.

Sometimes these have been done with drone strikes, after agents have placed a GPS tracker on an individual’s car; sometimes in the past it has even used exploding mobile phones.

On the ground, along the tense border fence between Gaza and Israel there are cameras, ground-motion sensors and regular army patrols.

The barbed-wire topped fence is supposed to have been a “smart barrier” to prevent exactly the sort of infiltration that has taken place in this attack.

To prepare for and carry out such a coordinated, complex attack involving the stockpiling and firing of thousands of rockets, right under the noses of the Israelis, must have taken extraordinary levels of operational security by Hamas.

And perhaps the biggest worry for Israel is this: how does it stop others responding to Hamas’s call to arms and avoid this conflagration spreading into the West Bank and possibly even draw in the heavily-armed fighters of Hezbollah across its northern border with Lebanon?
