Venezuelans seeking asylum in the US who are already living in the country will be allowed to work legally under new rules announced by the Biden administration.

About 472,000 people will be eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for a period of 18 months.

It follows calls by Democrats to expand work access for newly-arrived migrants.

US cities have been grappling with large numbers fleeing economic and political turmoil in Venezuela.

People must have been living in the US on or before 31 July to be eligible for temporary deportation relief and access to work permits under TPS. If granted, they will be allowed to work while they wait for an asylum determination to be made.

Immigrants make the best citizens. They actively want or need to be there, so they’re more likely to participate in the less glamorous parts of being a citizen. They build resilient communities, expose their new neighbors to different cultures and experiences, open great restaurants, and are less likely to commit crimes than existing citizens.

We are all better off when there’s a large and diverse immigrant population. It enriches everyone, both culturally AND financially.

We need more immigrants, not fewer.

There are two sides. They also can introduce problems to their new countries that largely solely exist in their home countries. For example, the UK has one of the highest rate of acid attacks, but this is fairly recent problem in the UK. There were all the sexual assaults in Europe in recent years. In North America there is caste discrimination in cities like San Francisco and Toronto. There are separatist/sectarian violence in developed countries which would not otherwise have it. An example from hongkong is sometimes triads will go to other countries and operate there.

Yeah I read about the caste discrimination in San Francisco, it’s a pretty fascinating example. I personally think when you couple the benefits to society as a whole with the day-to-day improvements for individual immigrants, the positives come out waaay ahead of the potential risks. And I think those risks could be mitigated by making deliberate and thoughtful policy–obviously outlandish, I know.

"Hey, sorry we spent decades destabilizing your global region to keep your markets ripe for the exploitation and private profit of our capitalists… kinda… ok not really. We would and probably will do that again at some point.

But hey, wanna crash on our couch? Because now our capitalists are more interested in diluting our domestic workforce to suppress domestic wages so, you know, win-win!"

    https://time.com/5512005/venezuela-us-intervention-history-latin-america/

I’m for us doing this, it’s something rather than nothing after what we’ve done to them. Just be aware, it’s a good thing being done for the wrong, opportunistic reasons, conveniently flooding the workforce just as labor gains bargaining power, diminishing it, just as the Fed seeks, as they consider an employment market with significant labor leverage “unhealthy.” Crazy how so many Americans honestly still believe the Fed cares about anything beyond making their rich friends richer at everyone else’s expense. I’m of the opinion motivations matter.

If you aren’t a meaningful shareholder, you’re just livestock to them.

Most of Venezuela’s problems are due to utterly moronic economic and monetary policy in addition to cast corruption at the top. It’s hard to emphasize how incredibly obvious their problems would be from the outset.

Perhaps so, but without the meddling of the US it’s also possible that such governance could’ve been avoided. The kind of government a country ends up with is a result of many factors.

The overwhelming majority of their issues come from their monetary policy choices, such as printing too much, and their failure to invest oil profits when the prices were high into literally any sector other than oil. They failed to do so.

America is a convenient thing to blame but they aren’t responsible for the current economy.

Did you know Donald Trump pardoned the dude who ran the company of the biggest immigration bust in U.S history (for the time)? I’m mentioning it because if you like overnight delivery, fruit, meat, clean hotel rooms, the list goes on, I have some bad news for you. This eliminates an entire pool of people from another level of exploitation and abuse in the U.S. To put it bluntly , this is a good thing.

My point is the people screaming the loudest about illegal immigration directly profit from it and gas people against it. They literally roll in the money and donate it to the same folks on nightly news talking about the border crisis. If there already in the U.S working to generate wealth for other people, like the rest of us, why can’t they be made citizens to have the same rights as the rest of us?

              Because you’re a racist and a xenophobe.

The whole reason that they’re in the cities care is because they can’t work. This solves that problem by allowing them to work. What part of that do you not get?

Yes, it makes perfect sense. In the words of Juicy J “people do strange things for that change, yeah money will do”. Fear is powerful, they say what needs to be said to remain in power. Hell grandma Boebert is on stage yelling about being squeaky clean, but having the full service 15 year old theater experience in Beetlejuice. Then flat out lied about it despite being on tape.

If you have a full workforce of people that can’t strike, labor laws don’t apply, they can’t tell anyone about sexual assaults, injuries, do you think the politicians who are getting cash care? Do you think those kids getting busted working in factories were america kids or undocumented kids?

These people aren’t “illegals” nor are they “undocumented”. They are Asylum Seekers which means that they’ve filled out paperwork and are awaiting a decision on their case. This program, TPS, doesn’t make them “legal”, as in grant them a Green Card or Citizenship, it just allows them to WORK legally while they are awaiting the outcome of their Asylum Case.

To put it in Conservative language; do you want these people to continue living off the State or would you prefer that they find a job and start paying taxes?
