Hello, after difficulty with existing wifi setups including a very frustrating bout with a Nest Wifi Pro, I’ve finally decided to pull the trigger and start my journey into a tech home with Ubiquiti. However, I’m not wanting to go gung ho here and spend a thousand dollars plus on a setup. I want to start with something solid that can also allow me to learn and upgrade as I feel the need. Maybe enough to get a camera or three going before having to upgrade to a UDM Pro, SE, or whatever is out then.
With that, I know this will cost more than the $200 I spend on a Nest Wifi Pro from Ebay. However, I do want to limit how much more. My internet connection is AT&T 300 so I don’t need anything too aggressive, just picking the right U6 variant. Here is a copy of my floorplan. It is roughly 2,350 sq ft.
Note the Bonus room is over the Garage. My Internet Router/Modem is in the hall closet next to the Entryway. It is currently just an ethernet run from the garage fiber converter so I technically can move it if need be but I’m not planning it. Overall typical wood framed house. Nothing special blocking the signal.
Anyway, I want there to be consistent signal all over the house. Outside would be nice, but it isn’t a requirement. Upstairs is my man cave so that is important. I’m expecting three APs. It would be nice if I could get away with two, but I’m not expecting that to be a realistic option.
The Back End
With all that, my main hang up is the backend. As said this is just for Wifi for now, but I would like to add a few cameras too. Likely starting with a doorbell and then maybe a few other spots around the house. Eventually this would lead to getting a UDM-Pro or SE. Getting that now would more than double the price so I don’t see it happening, but feel free to tell me why I’m wrong.
Option 1: I have an Old PC that I use as a Plex sever and NAS. Lots of storage. I could use that for now, but it probably wouldn’t be ideal as it isn’t dedicated and could more easily go offline.
Option 2: The Dream Router actually looks really great. It provides the brain for the system and a AP that seems roughly equivalent to a U6+. Though out of stock now, this is where I think I’m leaning. I’ve heard negatives about the processing power on it, but I expect by the time that is an issue I would likely be upgrading anyway. Can someone tell me how often this is in stock?
The APs
If I can get away with two APs, I was looking at the U6-LR, but that needs PoE+. Easily solved but still something to consider. I’m thinking I would probably mount it in the closet to give the best possible coverage of the Bonus room and master bedroom.
If I go with three APs then One would be upstairs and one in the Master Bedroom. Then it is just a matter of which one. U6 Lite, U6+, or U6 Pro I’m all ears for your suggestions.
