And it’s not even the gig economy. Nobody has any agency to do anything. I was trying to buy a frozen turkey at Target on sale after Thanksgiving. The tag fell off at some point. They told me that they couldn’t sell it to me because they had no way to weigh it. It took three people looking at the shrink wrap for a bar code (which never has the price since they’re individually weighed).
It was going to be like a $8 turkey, but none of them had the authority to just make that happen. Target would apparently rather have a checkout line grind to a halt than let a few dollars go as a weight is estimated.

Honestly, that has been an issue in retail for a long time. Nobody who would figure that stuff out would find a better job.
