The Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, has weighed in on a drama unfolding on the country’s beaches, declaring that beachgoers who use portable cabanas to claim a patch of sand are going against the nation’s spirit of equality.

For the people who will surely be commenting before reading the article:

It’s not about using cabanas on the beach, it’s about setting up a cabana early in the morning when it’s cooler and fucking off until mid-day when it’s hot.

People do this in Florida. Don’t care. There’s so much beach, you can setup out of site of another human, even in peak summer season.

I’ve not been to Florida, so I can only speak to the Australian side of things. Beaches here are patrolled by surf lifesavers and the safest parts to swim are marked by flags. These areas are the most popular and therefore limited space-wise. There’s nothing stopping anybody going elsewhere to pitch their cobana, but unless you’re a strong experienced swimmer, you generally want to be going in near those flags.

Same here with the lifeguards and flags, but one spot is pretty much the same as any other, really no variation. Driving into the beaches, from any direction, you can see the flags and warnings.

Seems like it’s a much bigger problem in Australia if the PM has to address it lol

I haven’t been to Florida in 20 years and I’ve never been to Australia so I can’t confirm either way
