In my region of Australia, there are active community groups on Facebook but not really (to my knowledge) any other online spaces.
I want to move away from Facebook, but unless that local stuff exists elsewhere I can’t fully quit. I’m involved in my local community garden, so I’ve been thinking I could set them up on a second platform (in addition to Facebook). It’s only one piece of the community, but it would be something, y’know?
So I’m wondering - where does your local community garden have an online presence? What other platforms might be useful for this sort of group?
(We currently have a Facebook page open to the local community, a little-used website, and email and FB Messenger chats for members.)
My old community garden used a Signal group which worked really well.
I’m currently part of a bushcare group which I believe use Facebook but not sure how active it is. We have a regular monthly schedule which I show up to in-person.
I can second the annoyance of people using Facebook groups for everything. I can’t control what I see on Facebook so I won’t use it. I’ve found other groups impossible to join for this reason - like my local bike user group. Real shame because I’d like to join but I found the in-person meetings were largely discussing things in the Facebook group.
I’m not into gardening, but this is such a pain for me. My sporting groups and political activism all happens on Facebook and/or Facebook Messenger. I so wish it didn’t, but that’s the reality right now, and one person’s objection is very unlikely to shift it.
If you can though, Friendica is a fediverse alternative to Facebook which you could consider.
Same but school stuff (parent groups for the class, fund raising discussions) and all family friendly community events are events on Facebook. I want to leave, but if I do I lose too much information and connection. So Facebook it is
