Or say, the equivalent of taking a dedicated bike path along the front of the river near the old Howard Smith wharves, and turning them in to a shared space, where cars, bikes and pedestrians all mingle around children and drunk folk

Hehehe. Yeah. QW doesn’t even have the excuse of maybe possibly not being able to know what would happen, because we can point directly to the mess that HSW has been to prove why this design of QW was always going to be bad.

At least it sounds like BCC might be about to force HSW to fix that mess.

          Yup! Facebook link.

          Text from CBD BUG:

          Howard Smith, Possible good news!

In September Howard Smith Wharves submitted new plans to Brisbane City Council to change/increase the size of the buildings inside of the site. Despite the existing shared use Riverwalk path through the site being a source of conflict & confusion between people on foot and wheels HSW did not propose to improve the situation. It appears BCC has listened to the public submissions and is requesting the sub-standard shared use path be upgraded to a best practice segregated path in line with Transport and Main Roads Queensland/ Austroads guidelines. If HSW accepts the request and BCC does not back down this will be a huge improvement to this cycling corridor. While shared paths are great for low use paths they are terrible for high use paths being filled with stress resulting in an unpleasant environment for those on foot or wheels.

All those years back when HSW was first proposed BCC wanted the now current path to be segregated but HSW’s refused. Lets hope this time BCC sticks to its guns and ensures Brisbane residents are delivered best practice not another sub-standard outcome!

It’s not guaranteed, but it’s a good step in the right direction.
