This starts out like every sector where people lose private ownership. Everything is nice and dandy up until the point where enough people don’t have a car or know someone who does and then it’s full speed to enshittification central.
I would consider renting for really big stuff where you need a full-blown transporter, but being able to have a stationwagon at your disposal makes life so much easier.
I guess it depends on where you live. In my city there are several pay as you go car rentals. You can pick up the cars and leave them all over the city. Same for electric scooters and bicycles.
You only get enshittification if there’s no competition. With good regulation that doesn’t have to be the case. Some cities also have a city owned car sharing/rental service of some sort.
