DAY 13 of the 30 Day Song Challenge, alternative music styles!
When music started getting WEIRD which led to the awesome 80s College Rock years - the 70s!!!
Each day I’ll post the challenge and you share some of your favorite alternative & indie songs that meet the challenge!
I mean, some absolute gems in this decade from Bowie, Krafwerk, Roxy Music, Talking Heads… god damn.
But for me, as a huge Violent Femmes fan, finding Velvet Underground was so important. Which song though??? tough choice, but let’s go with an absolute classic that I listen to on the reg: “Pale Blue Eyes” https://youtu.be/KisHhIRihMY
All my favorite bands point back to the VU - Alex Chilton, REM, Yo La Tengo, and on and on. They were cooler than cool.
Yep! There was a saying once about VU were single handedly responsible for a bunch of bands. Violent Femmes too!
YES!
Needles In The Camel’s Eye by Brian Eno
Elements of this sounds extremely early 90s alternative to me. He was so ahead of his time.
Pere Ubu - Nonalignment Pact (1978)
or the whole ‘Unknown Pleasures’ album by Joy Division…
New York Dolls - Personality Crisis
What a great frigging decade.
It’s unreal how much there is to choose from. All legendary.
musically, a super critical one too!
Beat me to it 😂! Essential song.
There’s so much I want to mention but I’ve managed to narrow it down to a few things.
My dad is a big fan of Yes so here’s a track that I heard a lot when I was a kid and still love today.
As an adult I’ve made some effort to dig into the stuff I missed out on from previous decades. I recently “discovered” Lou Reed and love everything he’s done.
Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed
And finally I want to bring up Brian Eno’s contributions to ambient music. No specific track but I love his albums Another Green World and Music for Airports.
Roundabout is amazing, Fragile is a fave, but Close To The Edge is where my heart will always be…
Why did a Girlschool song start playing in my head? 🤔
Because you have excellent taste in music perhaps
oh lmao “nine nine nine emergency” is the chorus to Girlschool’s Emergency. Silly British musicians feeling obligated to use the actual emergency number.
I’ve never heard of 999 before, this is a great track! It has more melody than I was expecting.
Discovered Black Devil Disco Club this month through a friend. Great Stuff.
this is too hard to choose . . .
patti smith, horses LP side 2 track 3 i think it is,
the long medley one that recalls other stuff on the album.
For all the crap on the airwaves, this decade still had a ton of great music. For instance…
@perishthethought @ren
so good
Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come
A fantastic band that I never see people mention in these kinds of threads.
