A friend of mine is a big time Trump supporter. He says “Trump is the best speaker in the history of the United States”. Showed him a written “speech”(one of Trump’s incoherent ramblings) and he couldn’t say a single word back, just chuckled at me and walked away.
Why are you friends with this person? How do you not just find him impossible to even be around?
We get along pretty well outside of Drumpf. He knows my views and I know his. We don’t let it fuck with our friendship and we respect each other’s views. We do fuck with each other often for laughs. We don’t need to be enemies with others who have different views, that’s not going to help anyone.

Good, I am very glad for you. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be friends, just that I don’t understand how you can be friends with him. Like I said, Trump supporters aren’t known for listening to other people, and if someone won’t listen to me then they can’t claim to respect me, so we’re not friends.

I’m sorry to say that I don’t understand how that’s possible. One of you believes that Trump tried a coup and is a traitor to this country and everyone in it, and one of you believes that he’s a patriot who was trying to save the country from the traitors. You both view each other as traitors to your country, only one of you is right, and it’s not the guy who believes you shouldn’t be allowed to vote. How can you respect that?

I’m not the one trying to overthrow our elected government and end our democracy. Trump supporters made themselves my enemies, supporting that. Republicans made themselves my enemies, when they joined forces with fascists and neo-nazis to call for the deaths of my friends and chosen family. I will not tolerate neo-nazism or fascism, and I can hardly be held to account for other people being fans of those things, so here we are.
Different person, but I also have a trump supporter friend. We get along in so many other ways that we separate for about 15 minutes and come back to start bullshitting about other stuff. I’m also working to deradicalize him, but it’s difficult since we don’t see each other often. We’ve been friends since we met each other in middle school, a relationship like that doesn’t just end.

The meme isn’t about the sort of hero-worship that Trump is receiving, which is a phenomenon unique to Trump. (Republicans didn’t hero-worship their candidates until he came along.) Rather, the meme is about people who have strong opinions about things they don’t understand, and these people include supporters of Bernie Sanders.
How much money should the government allocate towards cancer research? Are Starlink satellites creating a dangerous amount of orbital debris? Would experiments with geo-engineering to mitigate climate change be worth the risk? Is Biden’s economic policy responsible for the recent high inflation? Are the acts Trump is accused of actually crimes?
These are questions that even most experts can’t confidently answer but I recall them being discussed on Lemmy recently by people who were very confident about the accuracy of their uninformed opinions. I do that sort of thing sometimes too, despite my attempts to catch myself.
The Seuss-thing is clearly wearing a MAGA hat, let me know when you have a clearly identifiable clothing or logo that can also somehow lump in all those categories on ignorance.

Basically, the idea is you tell the people what they want to hear, but to figure out what they want to hear, you have to let your train of thought go crazy, then as the crowd wildly reacts, you change the path of the train to go that route to build up support.

That’s the crux of the entire thing. And honestly, many of these people don’t believe anything out of their own mouths. Obamacare’s bad, but the ACA is good. They quite literally do not use dictionary definitions of words, so they just get to feel however they please. You can prove it easily. Ask any American if they think the workers or the managers should get raises from profits. No one will say managers. Yet 99% of those same people will say populist socialist policies are the worst things to ever grace the earth.
