Infinity going subscription-only!
This morning when I opened Infinity to check Reddit, I saw the announcement above: they’re going subscription-only. Ironically enough, I couldn’t scroll down to see the rest of the message including prices, if there were any. I also couldn’t see if there was a button to close the message or start a paid subscription. I couldn’t proceed to Reddit at all. My only option was to close the app completely. So I uninstalled it.
That’s it for me using Reddit on mobile! Can’t say I’ll miss it much. But I added a LOT of content to Reddit that way, so it’s their loss. Fuck you, spez!
I have auto update turned off for apps, so I didn’t get the last update for Infinity and I can still use it to see Reddit, for now. Once it dies I’m out though. I can’t imagine they will be able to get enough subscriptions to support the app, so I’m not really sure what the goal is here.
The Infinity listing in the Play store links to this post that has a bit more info (warning: Reddit link) https://www.reddit.com/r/Infinity_For_Reddit/comments/147bhsg/the_future_of_infinity/
Even the people subbed to r/Infinity_For_Reddit are saying they won’t buy a subscription. Wouldn’t Infinity be racking up a huge bill from Reddit once the API change goes into effect? There’s no way subscriptions will cover that so I don’t understand why they’re doing this.
FWIW I migrated from Infinity to RedReader and I’ve been pretty satisfied with it. It takes a little bit to get used to the different navigation but Infinity’s navigation was already annoying (I had moved to Infinity about 6 months ago from Slide, which I think had the best navigation of all of them but Slide has been abandoned for quite some time).
@pixelpop3 I went to redreader also at first because they where giving a pass from the third party api mess. only thing i didn’t like about redreader is that the notifications takes 30 mins cause they don’t want to go against the api limit/refresh rate. I already deleted my reddit account on the 13th so there is no point anymore!
The 30min delay surprised me at first, but it’s nice as a way of disengaging from reddit and deprioritizing it. I wouldn’t mind setting it to once daily. 😂
Gonna be tricky with their fdroid version
Fuck u/spez!! 🖕🖕
I was willing to pay infinty a subscription in order to keep using reddit, but Lemmy is actually far better than I expected, so I’m just not going back to reddit now!
They should have announced what that subscription fee would be. The fact that they haven’t decided yet makes me think that I won’t like whatever they decide.
What I see happening is starting at a low monthly fee. Many users will not subscribe/delete Infinity. Now Infinity raises the fee to meet Reddit’s demands. Everyone else deletes Infinity.
I was holding out hope that there would be Infinity for Lemmy, but that ship has now clearly sailed.
So I guess its goodbye forever to Reddit.

Hmmmm… This might be me having a déjà vu moment or this is somehow similar to something that has made the news recently.
Seriously, this seems to me to be a subtle jab at Rəddit with how their API pricing announcement not having any pricing information as well as a push for its users to get off that site.
