Thought we should have a place to talk about all the events on throughout the Olympic day.
Korea v China in the archery was so intense. Fantastic to see Korea just pull ahead in the last 3 shots. 대한민국!
Watched the mountain biking earlier. Holy shit that was an amazing race. I was cheering for the Frenchman, but it was a seriously incredible effort from the pom to bring it back after being over 30 seconds down from a flat.
Then for the Frenchman to hang on and trade places back and forth over the last lap. It was so intense!
Disappointing that the result came down to an unfortunate bit of contact between the two racers, rather than a sprint finish. But to me it looked like completely fair play, just bad luck. Poor form from the French crowd to boo the pom as he came across the line, and then apparently again during his medal ceremony.
Watching Aus v GB in the hockey right now. Someone in the crowd had a sign reading “Arnott: No substitute for quality”. Brilliant stuff.

A player in the Australian team, Alice Arnott
Arnott’s biscuits, a popular Australian biscuit manufacturer, which famously used to have that as its slogan.
I wanted to comment on it, but I was far, far too enthralled in watching the men’s foil final to take my eyes away.
Wow that was a close-fought match. I’m not really sure I agree with the call on the last point; to me it look like he took priority by beating, but then pulled back and should have lost priority, making the final attack a tie. But the commentators and judges clearly don’t agree with me, and hell, I haven’t done sport fencing for over a decade now. (This whole thing is why HEMA tends not to like priority rules!) There were a few other suspect decisions from my POV too, like his sword hitting the cable and not registering a hit.
Anyway, regardless, the Italians were incredibly bad losers. The coach absolutely yelling at the judges. It might be one thing to yell disagreement during the match, but to go right up into his face and stand over him yelling after the match is officially over goes beyond. That’s the kind of behaviour that should get you ejected from the sport: he shouldn’t be allowed to be a coach at official matches for the next 2 years or something. And the fencer himself wasn’t much better. Nothing as obvious, but he rudely shrugged off the assistant staff. Not worthy of any sort of official sanction, but it lowers him in my eyes. The better man won, clearly.
I didn’t watch much of sets 3 and 4 of the America v China volleyball, but looks like we’re set up for an exciting set 5 decider.
Man, I’m a fencer, and I find fencing so hard to watch. It’s just so fast, that it can be very hard to know what happened even in person, and the camera doesn’t properly capture the movement the way your eye does making it so much worse. The French v Korean semifinal’s last point was absolutely spectacular, perfect clean fencing though.
Fantastic effort from China! A great final set!
Really great playing by China in the volleyball. Just really solid blocks and spikes. Great clean play.
America putting up a good fight back near the end, but it’s looking like it’ll be too little, too late.
Some fantastic blocks in the last point by America, but even better digs from China. China goes up 2 sets to 0 in style.
Yikes. Rough foul by Australia in the hockey
I don’t know hockey very well, but I’ll admit I’m very confused what just happened.
I don’t know why the ref called it a penalty corner.
I don’t know what Australia claimed was dangerous and would have meant the referral should have gone in their favour.
I agree with the video ref that nothing looked dangerous to me. (From my non-expert opinion.)
I don’t understand why the video ref and the on field ref were in disagreement about what should have occurred given the decision. But I guess my confusion here is shared by the players and the refs.
Oooh, Matrix-style bullet time camera effects in the judo!
Flicked back to the judo just in time to watch the end of regular time for the judo 73 kg men’s gold medal contest.
I haven’t watched a huge amount of the judo, but what I have watched has, I think, all gone to golden score. This is looking pretty exciting though.
Wow, exciting finish!
