This is called parsing - your brain processing the speech sounds into meaning. That feeling of suddenly realizing what was said is your brain needing a little extra time to parse.
This can happen for lots of reasons. One time my sister in law was so grumpy that my brain struggled to parse what she was saying because the tone and words were so mismatched.
Heh. Like a 90s dell computer analysing a string for certain characters.
Still beats C++ parsing speed.
Was your sister in law stuck in a dryer?
OP has a slow cache, might need to upgrade hardware
Race condition.
Autistic people:
This happens to everyone. It happens because your brain registers the other person saying something before it actually understands what is being said. And when most people don’t know what someone said, they ask, “what?” without even thinking. Source: my intro to psych textbook.
What?
Loading like a 90s dell computer
I got it the first time already 💀
Gotteem
If I have a dollar every time this happens I think I’d be good for groceries
Quick solution: when you don’t understand what someone just said, wait a few seconds before asking what. Often, your brain will fill in the gap given a second to catch up.
Good idea, they always repeat themselves when they see you sitting there with a confused and worried expression.😆
This is why I pause after someone says “What?”
Then they look at me puzzled when I don’t repeat it.
It’s fun to say something completely different when they ask what.
I’ve caught people doing this before but I never say anything because I don’t wanna have to explain to them why I can suddenly recall something I didn’t hear
I usually do this anyway to a certain extent, at least I kinda rephrase what I said, in case them asking ‘what’ wasn’t because they didn’t hear me but because they didn’t understand. Then if their brain does catch up they get two different versions of my message :)
That’s why, if someone responds with what?, I usually wait for a few seconds. It usually resolves the question on its own.
Forgot to press the turbo button again 😹
The turbo button slows it down
Well, yeah, my light switch turns the lights off too.
Nah, my what is for the last 2 words, not for the entire monologue to start over
“I just got back from the shop, do you want some s̷͇̾ẻ̶̠r̵͍̔v̵̱̏v̸͇͝n̸̟͛?”
Some what?
“What I SAID was: I just finished shopping, so do you want a bite of my ṡ̷̛͔̙é̵̢̚ͅṟ̷͌̍v̶̼̈́̈́v̵̞͂͑n̶̗̩̎??”
Or “Yhea, I got some of it at the shop, want some?”
Might be some form of APD, a lot of my family members have it (myself included XD)
Yea my brain is like a Kafka system
GET IN THE FUCKIN QUEUE
This happens quite often to me, especially when tired. I’m assuming that for me it’s mostly autism related. That being said, I’ve noticed that many non-autistic people also have this happen every now and then., it just happens more for me.
This is a excellent opportunity to practice patience with yourself.
If it happens again, try to respond by going into a deep thought instead of saying “What”. The other person will think you’re a wise thinker too.
