As an experienced hunter and anatomist, Roosevelt correctly concluded that since he was not coughing blood, the bullet had not reached his lung; he declined suggestions to go to the hospital immediately. Instead, he delivered his scheduled speech. His opening comments to the gathered crowd were, “Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible. I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot—but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.”

Yeah a lot of people don’t realize that a lot of the body cavity can take an alarming amount of bullets and still keep functioning more or less properly for at least a little while. Unless you nail something critical, any large animal (including humans) can keep going for quite a while with a bullet or two in them. There was a saying that old Andrew Jackson used to rattle when he walked because of all the duals he survived, implying that he had a few bullets lodged in there somewhere. It’s also why hunters try very hard to go for heart shots; otherwise the deer will run the fuck away and maybe not even die right away (or at all).
