Eugenia Kuyda, founder and CEO of Replika, an AI companion platform, is working to destigmatize the role of AI in dating and relationships. Contrary to the stereotype that AI chatbot users are lonely men seeking female companionship, Kuyda reveals that Replika has a significant number of female users who have found support and comfort in the platform. She shares examples of women who have used Replika to heal from past traumas, such as an abusive relationship, and to cope with challenging life events, like postpartum depression. Moreover, Kuyda highlights that the Replika team is largely composed of women, including herself, and that these products are built with a female perspective.

It still scares the hell out of me. I appreciate that has helped people but I would be more worried about it saying things it shouldn’t with that type of user base. I guess humans are about as much of a mixed bag for being able to be counted on and trusted as a support pillar though…

Makes perfect sense. AI companions aren’t perfect, no matter how much people try to convince themselves that they are.
