Original Title: LPT before you unpack in your hotel room, check your room’s: water pressure, water temperature, facilities, and HVAC. If there’s a major problem with one of them, it’s easier to move to a new room while you’re still packed.

I travel a lot for work and have been pretty lucky over the years. But in the last few trips I’ve taken I’ve had no hot water and facilities that would not work.

Both of them required me to swap rooms as they couldn’t be fixed there and then, and luckily, I had unpacked so it took me a couple minutes to move versus having to pack up and move everything.

Edit:

per the comments: unpack means opening your suitcase, taking out toiletries, hanging up coats, etc.

Do a quick tour of the facilities, hvac, and (as others have pointed out) bed for bed bugs.

I’d recommend checking the bed for bedbugs after checking for the other things. Chances are there will be none, but you’ll make a room change more difficult with an undone bed (you can’t check for bedbugs without undoing it). If there are no other issues, you can then check the bed: in the rare case that you find bedbugs, nobody will tell you no to a room change.
