I thought Microsoft would buy the company, not just hire the entire team from inside the company! Dunno what the board expected, sheer stupidity by them.

Seems like a massive, massive win for Microsoft. They get the brains behind OpenAI now working exclusively for them while also maintaining their investment in OpenAI if they carry on well.
