Not to turn this into a conversation about whether UB is good or not…let’s assume we’re all ok with EDH-legal UB cards like LOTR, 40k etc. because we have no choice anyway:

Seeing these LOTR spoilers, I see cards that are pretty good and think “that totally would fit in with my < deck x > deck” - but then always catch myself for thinking how odd it would be to immediately pull out Frodo or Gandalf or one of the other main LOTR characters in a deck that is otherwise 100% MTG IP. It’s somewhat immersion-breaking, which I know is strange for a catch-all format like EDH.

I have no problem with the set overall though, and might want to even build a LOTR commander…in which case I’d try to use 100% in-set cards. But don’t want to mix any of it with regular MTG IP cards.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Anyway - just saw there was EDH on lemmy, and thought I’d get the conversation started with what was on the top of my head!

I agree that a lot of the Universes Beyond cards feel like they should stay with cards in their own set, I’ve been enjoying the different sets though and am excited for the LOTR release!

I actually think it would be pretty funny to build a deck with cards from different UB sets just to watch people squirm but I’m not sure I could bring myself to do it permanently.
