    This has been happening for centuries though. Cao Cao mandated that first and last names needed to be at least 3 characters in all government forms. This move upset Lu Bu, which decided that war was the only way to settle the issue.

        Ha. iirc he did have some level of sovereignty. But for such stupid throwaway comment, I admit I didn’t actually remember much about what stage of his career overlapped with Lu Bu’s…

          Wikipedia says that Cao Cao was Minister of Public Works and acting General of the Imperial army when he fought Lu Bu in 198. Of course, in reality the young emperor was under his protection, so he could get most things he wanted approved.
